Looking out over the islands of Loch Assynt towards Beinn Garbh with its 539 metre summit. I couldn’t resist composing this image, an image that I believe sums up the Scottish Highlands, with its fine loch reflections and a lone Caledonian pine isolated ok its island. Its certainly one of my favourites from my recent trip there.

To celebrate the launch of the Snowdonia 360 E-bike packing film produced by SkyRise Productions, I have updated my Snowdonia 360 page on my website with the film and unseen images from the trip. The footage you see in the film was mostly captured by myself and Unhinged Productions

4-legged conservation in action on Black Down, which at 325m is the highest point of the Mendips, north Somerset. Our heathlands are incredibly important habitats supporting a whole range of flora and fauna, but they face many challenges like the overgrowth of shrub and bracken. This is where conservation grazing comes in. This is the most effective and natural method to manage this issue and ensures a healthy range of biodiversity as well as encouraging new growth of species by churning up the soil when the grazing herd moves around. Did you know that 40 species of insect feed on heather alone, and that 5,000 species of invertebrates are supported by heathlands?

On Black Down, this grazing is carried out by Exmoor ponies and Devon ruby red cattle and is fascinating to watch, but I don’t think people realise just how beneficial this grazing is. I’m currently brain farting an idea about making a short documentary about conservation grazing on Black Down, and wondered if there was anything people would want to learn/see specifically, such as the history of Exmoor ponies, the benefits of grazing, the biodiversity of Black Down etc? Also, would you want it to be narrated, purely cinematic or something completely different? Welcome to put your thoughts below!

Carrying on from yesterdays camoufage post, a female Ptarmigan shelters from the incoming storm, her winter plumage blending in perfectly with the surrounding landscape below the summit of Cairn Gorm. Ptarmigans are a very hardy species, surviving conditions up to 4,000 feet. They also have highly modified, thickly feathered feet which act as little snowshoes, meaning these birds can walk atop even the softest snow.
