Leila Azdou and some of the other beautiful, pioneering ladies working at The Tawesna Association in Ait Benhaddou, Morocco.

The Tawesna Association is a women’s cooperative that promotes women’s financial independence. In Moroccan culture they believe that women should not work, but rather stay at home and look after their family and home. Despite resistance from the men in the community, these women opened their own cafe, serving tea and pastries. Their main focus is to support divorced or widowed women within the community and create a safe space for these women to be in the company of like minded individuals.

The Tawesna Association has been consistently supported by Intrepid Travel- the company I used to book my tour of Morocco. It was an absolute privilege to meet these strong, inspiring women and see how my money was supporting the community.
