The earliest mention of this cottage is found in 1567. It was home to the estates Warrener, whose job was to tend a colony of rabbits kept as a food supply to Cockington Court. Later this changed to Pheasants, which roamed freely around the park.
Itโ€™s an easy one to miss if youโ€™re visiting Cockington, as itโ€™s well hidden in the park.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. Even though I had to work yesterday, itโ€™s been a weekend of dancing and dining. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The Abbey was originally a Benedictine Church, and building of the present building started in 1499. However the earliest record from 675 records a Saxon convent on land given by Osric, a local king to the Abbess Bertana.

First post for some time. I was dancing at Bath Guildhall on Saturday and couldnโ€™t resist getting a shot of the Abbey. I hope everyoneโ€™s well and sorry for the lack of engagement. Currently dealing with some major domestic problems, but hopefully will be back properly at some point in the near future.

I have absolutely no idea about this really remote cottage. Just the sort of place I want for 2024.

Happy New Year everyone.

This rural c15 church has surprisingly little information about it, other than it went through extensive restoration in 1882.

Itโ€™s an unusual style of church for Devon and as it wasnโ€™t open when I visited, on my list to re-visit at some point.

Iโ€™m not really feeling it at the moment. If it wasnโ€™t for running the dance freestyles I think Iโ€™d quit Social Media altogether.
A good friend gave me a great quote โ€˜When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do?
Just keep swimming. โ€˜
Iโ€™m holding onto it too, thank you! ๐Ÿค—

North Combe Farmhouse

This cottage was a great find in Salcombe Regis. It a very small village between Newton Poppleford and Sidmouth.

For such a small village itโ€™s inhabitants have had a long history of involvement in smuggling, the Reformation and colonising in the Americas. There were also persisting rumours of Pagan worship.

The farmhouse dates from 1633.

I know I havenโ€™t posted much for a long time, and sorry for the lack of engagement folks. Iโ€™ve got a lot of personal s**t going on, and trying to find direction. Iโ€™m going to a rave night on Fridayโ€ฆfirst time since 1994! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Itโ€™s time to get out there, have some fun and laugh again.

How was it I got so old before realising that there was another Clapham that wasnโ€™t in London.
Given the dreadful weather, I thought a nice Autumn picture very appropriate to post. ๐Ÿ‚ โ˜”๏ธ

Looking forward to the weekend and hosting another event. Do you have anything fun planned?

A deed of the Bishop Henry Marshall of 1194, mentions among others, St David's Church. Jenkins in his History of Exeter wrote of St David's Church in 1805:

"The church, which is situated on the summit of a hill, (called in ancient records St. David's Dune) is small and irregular, consisting of a nave and one aisle, without a chancel; the communion table being situated in the eastern angle of the nave. The whole of the building is remarkably low, as is the tower, which is square, containing four small untunable bells; the church is light, well seated, and kept-in good repair. The present edifice cannot lay claim to great antiquity, as it was built in the fifteenth century."

The present building was commissioned by the Rev C J Valpy French, and designed by W D Caroe. Constructed of limestone, it was placed on the same footprint as the old church to avoid the existing graves. The building work was completed and was consecrated by the Bishop of Exeter, on 9 January 1900.

I was happy to finally find the church open, without being full of people. Such a rare thing in city churches these days, away from the city centre.

My holiday is now over, so expect an Indian Summer to come upon us. After the gym tonight, Iโ€™m off blackberry picking for some vague plan of filling the freezer with Blackberry and Apple Crumbles!
Happy Monday Insta folken.

I visited Colebrooke back in 2020, when petrol was only 99p a litre...yes Iโ€™m still digging back through the archives.
The only benefit to the Covid nonsense was 12 weeks of exploring Devonโ€™s villages, with no traffic on the roads, and friendly elderly locals desperate to talk to a human being.

I love this thatched farmhouse and thought well worth a Sunday Share.
Yes itโ€™s a bit late in the day for posting, but since Zuckerbucks hatred of photography on Instagram, it doesnโ€™t really matter when I post, almost no oneโ€™s going to see it anyway.

I hope youโ€™ve have a great weekend, and now my holidayโ€™s over I expect weโ€™re in for a lovely heatwave! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thankfully Iโ€™m on holiday this week, and today I have a Hydrocortisone Injection to look forward to. Yay! ๐Ÿ˜•

I hope your dayโ€™s going to be better than mine.

The Longhouse

I visited Tedburn St Mary a while ago and thought it was about time to share some of the pictures I took.
On the way to the church is this stunning longhouse, which likely started life as a c16 farmhouse. Unfortunately facts are short on the ground unless you want to stay or potentially buy the place.

Tedburn is about 7 miles outside Exeter. It has a c16 Inn called The Kingโ€™s Arms and it is believed Charles I stayed here on a trip to Cornwall. The village is packed with old stone and Cobb houses. Well worth visiting if youโ€™re ever in the area.

Have a great Bank Holiday whatever plans you have. ๐ŸŒธ ๐Ÿƒ โ›…๏ธ โ˜€๏ธ

The history of Broadhembury owes much to a jilted lover. Before the Norman Conquest the manor of Hanberia (Broadhembury) was owned by the Saxon nobleman Brictric, Thane of Gloucester. Now Britric had an admirer, a Norman noblewoman named Matilda, but when she made her interest known, Brictriic rejected her, a move that would backfire spectacularly. Matilda married the illegitimate son of Robert, Duke of Normandy, a man better known to history as William the Conqueror.
When William defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and gained the throne of England, Queen Matilda had her revenge. Britric's estates were seized, and Broadhembury was given to William's half-brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. From Odo it passed through several hands until it was granted to the monks of Dunkeswell Abbey, six miles away.
It is possible that there may have been a church here since the Norman period, but we are on much safer historical ground when it comes to the present building, which was consecrated in 1259. Most of the 13th-century church was swept away in a comprehensive rebuilding in the late 15th century.
The building is made primarily of flint and Beer stone, with local greensand and red sandstone.

(Credit for information: wwwbritainexpress.com) I had to share this interesting back story.

I hope you have a great Bank Holiday weekend. I now have a week off work and plan on travelling to a few places in East Devon and Dorset. Finally some new content!
