In Layers
11 June 2026
I studied printmaking as well as painting when I was a student and taught both for 52 years. I realise now that my method of working as a painter is similar to a printmaker, working in layers and stages.

By that I mean that after experimenting, every thing is planned so I know which stage to do first. Ofcourse, it doesn’t always go to plan and there is still room to change things later but I have a pretty good idea what’s going on as the work progresses. However, I hope I can still spot how a chance mistake can take the painting in a different direction.

Recently, I’ve been reading a book about how Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power (‘Sybil and Cyril’) revolutionised lino printing in the 1920s /30s. They were also painters so maybe that’s what made me think of links between the two media.

Artists At Home
6 June 2026
I was pleased to see that my article and photo about our ‘Artist At Home’ event appeared in the Ely Standard this week (you can also see it on my latest Instagram, Facebook and Bluesky posts).

Hazel and I are showing our paintings during the Ely Arts Festival on the weekends 13th/14th and 20th/21st June, 11am -5pm on each day.

I had written the piece out with (I thought) a rather good joke but they got it the wrong way around. I wanted to say when describing my latest painting ‘Time Frames’, (which is about the inconvenience of death) that it would be ironic if I died before the painting was finished. Instead, they attached this statement to my current work, ‘Forged In Life’.

I’m in the Ely Standard this week to advertise my involvement in the Ely Arts Festival. Hope you can visit!

Read All About It
30 May 2026
My Painting ‘Forged In Life’ has started taking shape. I’ve traced on the first layer and been painting strips of paint in the background.

These were inspired by a photograph showing the results of climate change, where wooden buildings collapsed and had become separate planks again.

I also added strips of newspaper headlines roughly the same shape. Although the words will be less readable as the painting progresses they are to represent the promises people make but get forgotten about.

You can see my progress so far on my latest Instagram, Facebook and Bluesky posts.

I’ve just started my latest picture ‘FORGED IN LIFE with some under painting and collage work.

Frottage
25 May 2026
I was interested in seeing Dougal Kirkland’s use of Frottage when we viewed his wall-hanging at the Wilson Museum and Gallery in Cheltenham last week.

It was the surrealist, Max Ernst who developed this technique of rubbing objects with a surface texture and transmitting it another surface for some of his artworks.

It has given me an idea of how I might obtain the surface of bricks in our old fireplace for my next painting ‘Twas The Night Before’.

You can see a photo of Kirkland’s use of Frottage on my latest Instagram and Facebook posts.
