Processed meats such as ham, bacon, salami, sausages, and frankfurters have been classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization (WHO). 🥓🔬
A Group 1 classification means there is strong scientific evidence that these products can contribute to the development of cancer in humans. The designation was reached after researchers evaluated a large body of epidemiological data collected from populations around the world.
Studies have consistently linked frequent consumption of processed meat with a higher risk of colorectal cancer, and evidence also suggests an association with stomach cancer. Research indicates that the risk tends to increase with greater long-term consumption.
Health experts generally recommend limiting processed meat intake and maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other minimally processed foods. 🥗🌍✨
