Sunrise at Chiesa Di San Giacomo

This church dates back to the 11th century and is the oldest in the whole of the Val Gardena.

To get there in time for the sunrise requires a 20min, fairly steep hike in the dark through the surrounding woodland but the reward is worth it, with stunning views of the Sassolungo.

Last light - Seceda View 6

Here's the final image from our amazing sunset experience at the Seceda summit in the Dolomites. If you haven't seen the others, check them out on the timeline.

We were dashing down the hill to catch the last gondola back down, when this scene caught my eye...I wasn't sure whether to keep running or stop. I quickly scrambled the camera with the telephoto lens set to 200mm and took a few hand held shots. I had no idea if they were in focus, I just had to snap then run some more.

We made it with a few seconds to spare, otherwise it would have been a long, dark walk home!

Odlegruppe Timelapse

Something a little different today! This mountain range is the same one shown in my previous recent posts but as viewed from the Val di Funes.

We arrived at night time and the sky was incredibly clear, so it would have been criminal to have missed the opportunity to make a timelapse of the celestial wonder. This is around 90 minutes condensed into 7 seconds.

Sound on for the full experience!

Sunset Panorama - Seceda view 5

Here's the larger panoramic view form the moment the sun was setting on our visit to Seceda in the Dolomites.

These are the moments you crave for as a landscape photographer, where the light brings the scene to life, but so often it is fleeting and you have to work fast to capture the image.

It might have been -15 degrees up there, but the adrenaline hit and the challenge of working the scene keeps the body active and warm!

View along the Odle - Seceda view 4

This is probably the most prominent focal point at the Seceda summit, looking along the Odle ridge. It is the same mountain range shown in my previous post of the Chapel of San Giovanni in the val di Funes (check that out on the timeline) but from a very different angle.

The lighting was incredible, showing off the structure of the ridge in all its glory.

Seceda sunset view 2

From this location there is such a feast for the eyes in all directions, at times it was difficult to know what subjects to focus on. There is a strong temptation to try to capture everything in sweeping panoramas, but I tend to find a less-is-more approach is usually best (but there are exceptions!).

As I looked South the some incredible side lighting was coming and going on this rock formation, bringing so much depth and texture to the scene so I zoomed in and waited for the right time to click the shutter.

Solitary Hut - Seceda view 1

Over the next few posts I'm sharing a wonderful experience of witnessing sunset at the Seceda viewpoint in the Dolomites.

I noticed the snow surrounded hut on the hillside as I looked East and the mountains beyond created much depth and dramatic layering. The wind was adding interest, whipping up the snow around the edge of the ridge. As is so often the case with landscape photography, the initially beautiful light had faded before I could set up the camera, so I waited...15mins later a fleeting opening of the clouds revealed an even better quality of light so I opened the shutter.

I felt the scene lent itself to a sepia-style colour toning in this case. I hope you enjoy it.
