I loved the reflection of this Lighthouse in the puddle, so I had to take these shots.

These are just a few rough edits on an app on my phone to see what they would look like in black and white.

I'm looking forward to having a play with them once I get into my studio.

The photographic still life art print titled "Alexander II: Borderline" captures a pivotal moment in Scottish history when King Alexander II signed a treaty that defined the Scottish border. Through the clever arrangement of symbolic objects, the artwork conveys a story rich in political strategy, the moves made by Alexander II and the significance for the nation of Scotland.

This image is one of 15 images from the Scotland's Chequered Throne® collection about the Scottish monarchs through a series of levitation photographs showing the sacrifices and the triumphs of the succession of the Scottish Monarchs. Each player has their own story to tell from the defining of the Scottish English Border to the union of the crowns of Scotland and England and everything in between.

The collection is a journey through history as the stories unfold through these magical and distinctive photographs that incorporate playing cards, a chessboard, and unique pieces of art. All 15 images are listed so you can collect as many as you want!

"So much better than faffing about with a phone..."

I think a lot of small business owners can relate to that!

When you're trying to create images for websites, applications, social media and marketing materials, photographing your own work can quickly become frustrating. Lighting, backgrounds, sizing, editing... it all takes time away from actually creating.

It was a pleasure to photograph Jennie's wonderful dolls and create a collection of images ready for exactly what she needed them for.

Thank you for the lovely feedback

There's a huge difference between taking a quick photo of artwork and photographing artwork professionally.

The goal is not simply to "get a picture".

The goal is to preserve texture, tone, detail, atmosphere, and the true personality of the piece.

As both an artist and a photographer myself, I understand how frustrating it can feel when a photograph simply doesn't capture the magic of the original work.

That's why I take a slower, more considered approach in the studio.

📸 Controlled lighting
📸 Careful composition
📸 Attention to detail
📸 Time spent getting it right

Because artists deserve imagery that reflects the quality of the work they have created.

One of the biggest mistakes artists make when photographing their work is photographing it under yellow indoor lighting.

It changes everything:

📸 Whites become cream
📸 Blues shift green
📸 Shadows become muddy
📸 Fine details disappear

And unfortunately, that means potential buyers are not seeing the artwork as it truly is.

Good artwork photography is about accuracy just as much as aesthetics.

Your work deserves to be represented properly.

Witch in the Kirkyard is one of four images in Calling Up Storms - a fine art series exploring the fear, tension, and persecution surrounding the Scottish witch trials under James VI and I.

This image draws on accounts from the North Berwick witch trials of the late 16th century, where it was believed that witches gathered in the kirkyard of St Andrew’s church to dance, perform rituals, and plot with the devil himself. These stories - dark, distorted, and often used to justify persecution - led to imprisonment, torture and death for many women (and some men) across Scotland.

Set against a still, smoke-drenched scene, Witch in the Kirkyard captures that unsettling space between myth and memory. It’s not a literal recreation, but a visual reflection on fear, suspicion, and the lives caught in the crossfire.

This piece forms part of Calling Up Storms, a series that wasawarded an Honourable Mention in the Fine Art category of the Annual Photography Awards 2023.

The Succession of the Scottish throne was chequered with highs, lows, triumphs, battles and bloodshed. From the Golden Age of Scotland with the defining of the Scottish-English Border through the Wars of Independence and the rise of the Royal Stewarts, to the Union of the Crowns, each Monarch has their unique story.

My Scotland's Chequered Throne® collection was designed to tell these fascinating stories in a fun, modern, and surreal way. It explores the succession of fifteen Scottish Monarchs, presenting a story that is pivotal to Scotland’s history.

Each Monarch has their own chequered story to tell about how they contributed to the course of Scottish history through the games they played. Some played the hand they were given well, whereas others did not.

The images were created using innovative still-life levitation techniques. Each object was cleverly selected and meticulously placed to tell intricate stories pivotal to the succession of Scotland. The images are accompanied by the stories from history that inspired them.

People often assume photographing artwork is simply a case of hanging it on a wall and taking a quick picture.

The reality is very different.

The lighting alone can completely alter a painting’s tone, depth, texture, and colour balance.

Too much light and detail disappears.
Too little and the work feels flat.
The wrong angle creates glare and distortion.

A huge amount of care goes into making sure artwork is represented honestly and beautifully.

Behind every professional artwork image is patience, precision, and a deep respect for the original piece.

As artists, we spend countless hours creating the work itself.

But how often do we stop and think about how that work is being presented online?
Lighting, shadows, reflections, colour accuracy, composition... all of these things influence how your artwork is perceived before somebody even reads a single word about it.

I’ve recently introduced a dedicated photography service for artists because I kept seeing beautiful work being let down by rushed photographs taken in poor lighting.
Professional photography is not about making artwork look different.

It is about helping it look as close to reality as possible.

Whether you are applying for exhibitions, approaching galleries, building a website, selling prints, or sharing work on social media, the quality of your imagery matters more than many artists realise.

Your artwork deserves to be seen properly. DM me if you want to find out more about my services
