On The Surface (6) - Self Portrait

This part of the series was about a conversation I have with myself almost daily. It was about the relationship between me and my skin, more specifically how I feel about having a skin condition. As with the other portraits, the images describe how just because it comes from something negative, doesn’t mean your perspective on it has to replicate that. This was particularly hard for me because I struggle to take self portraits usually, even though I know I need to take more, but the thought of taking a photo whilst my skin could be bad, was not something I wanted to do. Even though I knew my skin wasn’t nearly at its worst, it is still that much more difficult for me to think about people seeing it. But, there is beauty in nature and sometimes you have to embrace that in whatever form it takes.

The photographs were accompanied by an essay-style text about how it feels to have this condition.

On the Surface (4) - Emma

This part of the series is about Emma, her tattoos and what they mean to her. When interviewed, Emma spoke to me about each of her tattoos but the one that I found most interesting was the one on her wrist. I wrote a poem to describe the story behind it.

“3/7”

‘goodnight Emma’ my father says to me,
‘goodnight Emma,
Three,’

A secret language for us, just for him and me.

i look up at him, but what is more than 3?
how can I love you more than you love me?
i count my numbers, one, two, three,
‘goodnight Dad,
Seven’,

7 for you, 3 for me.

On the Surface (4) - this part of a the series could be said to have started it all. It was Cameron’s tattoos and dedication to his favourite football team that inspired me to create a collection about things that lie on the On the Surface.

These photos are all about my my brother and how I (and others I imagine) used to look at his tattoos, and think they were just about football and they were silly - especially as one of them was a drunken tattoo. Through interviewing him, I got to realise that it’s about more than that, each dot of ink representing so much more than people think. The football club - the family created through love of a sport - being there for you all the time through thick and thin - a constant through the presence of change. I wrote an essay about what I discovered to accompany the images.

On the Surface (3) - Mum

This part of the series is all about my mum and the scar she has stretching the whole of her back. When she was very young, my mum was born with a large birthmark that her parents chose to get removed, resulting in a large scar replacing it. Accompanying the images was a large text, communicating my mums feelings towards the scar, both then and now.

It seems like a common ‘want’ in life to have tattoos, Whether that be one
or one hundred.
Some mean nothing,
Others mean more.
Others are your Mother’s last name.
A piece of her to you
and you to her,
Forever stained on the skin like a declaration in time.
Others are your home.
Your appreciation, your nostalgia, your very essence of being. They are your personality in a place, your secrets in a number. Your heritage, your family, your stitches in the wounds of memory.
Decrypted surnames,
Home and away,
Others are Everything.
Those dots of ink may look like nothing,
but nothing is a word with much more meaning to those who speak its language.

This set of images is part of a collection titled “On the Surface”. It is set to show and represent skin and everything that entails - the good and the bad. Your creases, your marks, your scars, your artwork. This is a collection to celebrate both the things visible on the skin and those that might not be shared as easily. All of the images are accompanied by a piece of text/prose written by myself that I feel communicates the feelings within the images. The text is displayed below.
P.S Thank you to Kajsa for modelling for this part of the series!!

A long time ago now,
November 2001,
The memories are foggy, faded, distant, But the trauma will not be undone.
All those years ago, one body that day, She has evolved and grown since then, A delicate infant, small and bare, When would she cry once again?
Just above the thigh, not far from her waist,
An array of leaves sit near,
They hug and caress, chasing away all from before, Yet hold the memories dear.
A delicate little infant,
Soundly she sleeps,
The agony of dislocation creeps in,
But she does not cry nor does she weep. The pain and discomfort,
Slowly,
It seeps.
Now she stands tall and twenty-one years, All that’s left is those leaves over a scar, No pain,
No tears,
No thoughts of discomfort, embarrassment or fear, No, it’s just confidence and pride,
Anything else, is not welcome here.

Another interior from Lauriston Castle a week or so ago. Really just like the way the sun was shining over all the glass. It was also really interesting to find out that the owners of the house actually preferred to have mismatching cutlery that they’d collected over the years of travel, instead of having a completely identical set.
