A band of warm light settles over the South Downs as the sun drops toward the Channel. From Beachy Head, the chalk cliffs fall sharply to the water, and Belle Tout Lighthouse sits clearly on its clifftop position to the west, its structure catching the last direct sunlight. The sea reflects muted orange and pink tones, and the long shadows across the headland mark the end of the day with quiet precision.

A recent trip to Wales gave me this view from the cottage. The sun slips down behind Shell Island in a slow, unhurried glow, as if it knows there’s no need to rush in a place like this. From this quiet spot near Llanbedr, the light spread across the estuary and the fields in front of me in soft bands of gold.

Cwm Prysor Viaduct Is a striking stone railway viaduct in a remote part of Eryri (Snowdonia). Built for the former railway line through the valley, it stands as a reminder of the area’s industrial past while blending surprisingly well into the surrounding landscape. Although trains no longer cross it, the structure still feels impressive for its scale, craftsmanship, and isolated setting. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop and think about how much effort once went into building railways through difficult terrain.

Porthmadog, Gwyned, is a small harbour town with a big story — once a powerhouse of the slate‑exporting world, today it blends maritime heritage with mountain views and a relaxed coastal charm. Its harbour, carved into the Glaslyn Estuary, still feels alive with history, even as yachts now replace the old slate schooners.

What makes Porthmadog especially captivating is how picturesque it is: pastel‑fronted buildings, calm tidal waters, and the rise of sailboat masts in the harbour. It’s the kind of scene that feels almost designed for a jigsaw puzzle — full of colour, texture, and those little details that make you linger over each piece.

Walking on the South Downs above my home town of Eastbourne always lifts my spirits. The rolling hills, open skies, and sweeping views as well as the vibrant and colourful plant life and birdsong which give me a sense of peace I can't find anywhere else. As I follow the chalk trails, I feel more connected to nature, breathing in the fresh air and hearing only my heartbeat, birdsong and the crunch of the trail under my feet. It's not just good for my body—it clears my mind, helps me think clearly, and leaves me feeling refreshed and grounded.
