This time of year always makes me pause and reflect.
I was scrolling through some old photographs that mean a lot to me. A small set I uploaded to Unsplash back in 2019, all taken around my home city, Kingston upon Hull.
I only added a handful, so I was genuinely surprised to see the views put me in the top 25% of contributors.
The most popular one was taken from the top of an office block. Old Town rooftops, Hull Minster standing proud, and The Deep in the distance. It was a gorgeous day, and I remember being up there with my youngest son, just taking it all in.
Unsplash hasn’t made me rich, but seeing my work used is still a quiet joy. A quick Google reverse search shows that image popping up all over the world, helping to promote the city.
And recently, Hull was named one of the top 25 global destinations to visit in 2026 by National Geographic. In the carousel, I share why. For me, it’s the people and the history. It’s got depth. And energy.
Does everyone feel this way about their hometown?
