Hello folks!

Last October, I posted an image entitled "The Last Post", referring to the fact it was the last of the images I'd taken on a recent trip. Nine months later, you could be forgiven for thinking that it really was the final post...

A combination of full time work, a relative lack of obvious landscape locations near home, and a loss of photographic mojo have all combined to confine my camera to the cupboard for many months. Maybe things are about to change, or maybe it will be another nine months before my next post! Time will tell.

Anyway, I returned to Sussex last weekend and made a flying visit to one of my old haunts - a real happy place of mine, on the banks of the River Arun at Arundel. I've photographed this view many times, so there's nothing original about it. But it was nice just to be there, and the passing paddle boarders added a little extra to the scene. As I stood there watching the changing light, I was brought to attention by the "kee kee kee" sound of an approaching bird of prey. When I looked up, one bird turned out to be three birds, and I watched a family group of peregrine falcons pass by, climbing and diving with each other as they practiced their hunting skills. Or maybe they were just having fun. A wonderful moment and an excellent reminder of why I love to be out with my camera in the countryside.

Mother Nature has a way of rewarding anybody who spends time in her company.

Well done Ian. More well deserved recognition for a damn fine photographer. Check out his page, if you haven't already.

Nearing the end of the selection of images from my recent visit to Wyming Brook. This was a location I'd wanted to visit last year, but it was closed to the public as a result of extensive work to clear diseased trees. It must have been a real blow to the local dogwalkers and other regular visitors to this special place, to be prevented from walking here.

As for this image, it's another gloriously cluttered view of the water tumbling down through the tree lined and boulder strewn landscape. Smashing!

Light in the dark...

A shaded corner of Wyming Brook. The sun was just climbing above the opposite side of the valley, casting pools of light into this scene. A world away from civilisation, and yet such a short distance from the centre of Sheffield.

I stopped to talk to a local dog walker, who was very proud of this gem of a location. She explained that "we like to keep this place to ourselves - that's why the public transport round here is so bad and the car park so small". I completely understood. Nothing worse than having a spectacular northern landscape ruined by troublesome southerners stomping all over it...

Jungle jumble...

I do like a messy, cluttered scene. Obviously, I'm talking about the natural landscape here - not the sort of messy scene visible when the foxes have emptied the neighbours' bins.

And this scene is definitely packed full of stuff. If you like white water, boulders, trees of both the upright and the fallen varieties, and a scattering of autumn leaves - well, surely this scene is for you. I'm often fascinated by the leaves that cling defiantly to the rocks, like wafer-thin barnacles on a boat.

Location: Wyming Brook, Yorkshire.

Huffenpuff...

The walk back to Wyming Brook car park is an uphill one. Like walking up hundreds of steps. This was a lovely spot to catch my breath, glug down some water and take a bite of one of the many emergency snack bars I keep in my camera bag for just such an occasion - more fuel was required before continuing up those steps.

I'm not a huge fan of obvious man-made features in my images, but this bridge made it into the composition for one very important reason - it was impossible to leave it out. I think this might be my favourite photo from the trip. Just enough autumn colour to represent the season, a patch of light in the background, white water, mossy boulders, and a handy fallen log that seems to be pointing up to that bridge.

Look closely, and you might be able to see a little green object balancing on top of that foreground log. It looks like the green outer casing of a chestnut to me, although I'm a novice at identifying such things. How the heck it came to be balancing on the log like that without falling off again, I don't know.

One of life's little mysteries, I suppose...

S curves...

It's in the promised land of landscape composition, along with mist and golden sunsets. The S curve, a leading line into the image and back out again. Of course, it takes more than an attractive curve to make an image. Fortunately, the landscape of Wyming Brook provides many other components - shallow water running over rocks and boulders, the banks of the stream lined with lush foliage, and a good spot to stand and place a tripod.

This place is only 5 miles or so from the centre of Sheffield, and was a welcome source of relaxation - much needed after the drive through Sheffield to get there. Entirely my own fault - all I had to do to avoid the traffic was to get my lazy backside out of bed an hour earlier. Serves me right then!

It was worth the bother though. Another beautiful spot to return to on another day.
