Cycling helps me to achieve my mental health and fitness goals! I know the person who shouted obscenities at me this evening while I rode along won't see this or care, but yes, cyclists come in all shapes and sizes and they ride for all sorts of reasons; let's spread positivity not negativity! Just be kind.

Boom 💥

Becky Mursell spent four years cycling 3,500 kilometres around London and photographing 120 people on their bikes. None of them look like a cycling industry advert.

That is the point.

Mursell was working in a London bike shop in 2022 when she noticed a gap between the customers walking through the door and the riders featured in the marketing imagery on the walls. Slick kit, expensive bikes, beautiful locations. The everyday cyclists she served looked nothing like that. She picked up a camera. Four years later, the result is on public display.

The Everyday Cyclist exhibition launched in late May at Osterley Park, where it runs until 6 July. From 8 July it moves to Brockwell Park in Brixton, staying there until 31 August. Mursell hopes to tour it further across the UK. Twelve aluminium boards, three metres of portraits and stories on each, installed on park railings. Free to view, in daylight, no gallery.

The riders include handcyclists, commuters, group leaders, mechanics and adult learners. Several were sourced through London Cycling Campaign and the inclusive cycling charity Bikeworks. Each portrait is paired with the rider's own words.

Mursell funded the installation through a crowdfunding appeal earlier this year. The project does not aim to change cycling industry marketing. It changes what people walk past on a Sunday.
