ICEBERGS & WAVES 🌊

Sailing in the high latitudes we encounter icebergs of all different sizes and shapes. Typically about one-tenth of the volume of an iceberg is above water. The contour of the underwater portion can be difficult to judge by looking at the portion above the surface.Do we always give them a wide berth - especially when running with a full blown gale.

LIGHT-MANTLED ALBATROSS

My highlight sailing in the Southern Ocean are always the birds surrounding the vessel: from Black Browed and Wandering Albatross to Giant Petrels, Wilson Storm Petrels and Cape Petrels. These masters of the air never stop fascinating me as they glide past effortlessly in gale force winds, barely moving their wings. A never-ending spectacle I enjoy observing for hours whilst on watch.

FULL MOON 🌕

…over Stanley. We had clear skies over the Falkland Islands on our last night ashore. With a big high pressure system just North of the Falkland Islands it was time to slip lines and use the favourable westerly winds to get on our way towards the South Sandwich Islands .

GENTOO PENGUINS

Gentoo parents, which often form long-lasting bonds, are highly nurturing. At breeding time, both parents will work to build a circular nest of stones, grass, moss, and feathers. The mother then deposits two spherical, white eggs, which both parents take turns incubating for more than a month. Hatchlings remain in the nest for up to a month, and the parents alternate foraging and brooding duties.

KING PENGUIN

Not many people know that South Africa’s most southerly point is actually not Cape Agulhas, but an Island 1200nm South-East of Cape Town: Marion Island. Here we found, besides other Sub-Antarctic animals, colonies of King Penguins. I took this photo in Kildalkey Bay on the SE side of Marion, where there is a big King Penguin colony and the team from Plimsoll productions filmed most of their sequences for
