CORNWALL JULY 2022
I was lucky enough to get away for a holiday this past month to Treknow, Cornwall.
It was absolutely beautiful, the scenery was unlike anything I had seen before, or remember from going Cornwall as a child. The cliffs jutting out into the sea, which at low tide revealed picturesque little cove beaches. I was in awe at Cornwall's beauty, I even loved the single track narrow roads, towered over by grass and hedges, though I must admit this was probably because I wasn't the one driving.
As soon as we arrived we decided to try and find a beach, though this was unsuccessful because the tide was coming in, we were greeted instead by cascading cliffs littered with cormorants, and gulls, walking along the coastal path to fully take in the location. We headed into Tintagel to find some food, and came across vegan pasties, as well as a multitude of different meat filled pasties. Whilst we waited for the check-in time to come around we headed down towards Tintagel castle, and enjoyed an ice cream in an elevated cove. It was time for us to check-in so we headed to Summerhut which was perfect for the two of us, and with a raised seating area looking right out over the sea I was in heaven. We took another stroll across the fields to the coastal path which is pretty heavy going, lots of steep ups and downs, but its well worth it for the view, and for the obligatory mini photoshoots!
After spending the morning at the Polzeath Beach's immense sands we went in search of a supermarket to get some previsions, taking an alternative route after being stuck behind a coach on the narrow roads, less than ideal, we we brought to a small little alcove called Port Quin, made a mental note to come back, and drove onwards to Port Isaac, I do not recommend driving through the town, the narrow streets are almost impassable. Again I made another mental note to go back to Port Isaac, though there were significantly more tourists than at Port Quin.
We headed back to Port Quin after stopping off to get lunch for a picnic from the bakery with vegan pasties, I also had a vegan apple turnover! Incredible! We sat atop the rocks in the cove and ate lunch, it was so peaceful, only a handful of other people came and went. I managed to persuade Rob to do some rock pooling, though we didn't find much I did see a fish about 25cm long, some schools of smaller fish and two small crabs. The rock pools were massive, and during our hunt we came across a cave, though we only wandered in a short way. We then made our way back to Summerhut, via Port Isaac, where we had a wander down into the town, took some photos, got some treats, and had a cider.
Friday! We booked a table at Port William, a beautiful restaurant next to the sea in a cove, whilst walking the coastal path down to the restaurant we were greeted by Trebarwith Sands, which neither of us realised would be quite so big, but low tide revealed a beach at least 200m long, which had been completely hidden from our view on our previous coastal walks. I must say a highlight of this trip was the food, but the best food I had was the vegan fish and chips at Port William, the vegan fish, was banana blossom beer battered, which was mind blowing! I'd never heard of banana blossom before let alone tried it, so I really was dicing with the devil, and I've never been so glad I've tried something before! Friday ended with a quick trip into Tintagel to pick up some gifts, and then we started the long drive home.
The holiday was short and sweet but beautiful in almost every way, and there's no one else I would have rather spent my time in Treknow with.
