🌼 “Observatory Hill rises up above Durham and overlooks the city’s Cathedral and World Heritage Site. In May and June, the hill is covered in buttercups and other wildflowers.”

Kevin Edworthy’s Observatory Hill, Durham captures a place shaped as much by seasonal ritual as landscape. As he writes: “At the end of the summer term, a popular Durham University tradition is to gather with your mates on top of the hill and watch the sun setting over the Cathedral.”

“Students will fetch old armchairs and other student collectibles such as road signs and traffic cones, up to the summit, to make their evenings more comfortable.”

🏗️ Kevin Edworthy, Easy Does It, 2024 - Corner of Blackett Street and Pilgrim Street

At Blackett Street and Pilgrim Street, a key part of Newcastle has recently been rebuilt. The former Odeon Cinema site is now complete as HMRC offices. This image returns to the period when that work was still underway.

Across the street, Northern Goldsmiths and its golden mannequin clock continue to mark the same corner. Edworthy’s photograph comes out of that overlap, when the site was still in motion and the street hadn’t yet settled into its new form.

The moments that locate change in a specific place, before they disappear into the finished version.
