👉Sometimes history isn’t just a collection of dates in dusty books. Sometimes it carries the distinct scent of grease, the chill of metal and echoes like thousands of footsteps across a production floor. 📸Today, I had the opportunity to visit a fascinating exhibition dedicated to the history of the Vauxhall factory in Luton.
A place that, for over a century, was the beating heart of British motoring and which now, sadly, is finally disappearing from the map. It’s a poignant feeling to see such a titan pass into history, but I find comfort in knowing that its legacy will survive in literature and captured frames.
🤫For me, this isn't just another closed factory. It’s a personal chapter of my life. I was once a cog in this great machine myself—working as an assembly-line operative. And although this work took a significant physical toll, ultimately leading to disability, looking back, I view it as an incredibly interesting stage of my career.
⚙️Every morning, as I walked through the Vauxhall gates, I felt a deep sense of pride. I was walking on ground that had forged history for over 100 years. It all began in 1905, when the company moved to Luton. It was here that legends were born: from Prince Henry to the reliable Bedford trucks and the icons of British roads like the Viva, Victor, and Cavalier. During WWII, this plant was vital, producing over 5,600 Churchill tanks to support the nation.
⚙️Today, as production officially ended 120 years, a monumental chapter has closed. But the spirit of Vauxhall and the sweat and pride of thousands of workers – including my own memories of working on the production line – will remain with us forever.
👉I highly encourage everyone to visit the Stockwood Discovery Centre and see the "Luton Made: Vauxhall" exhibition. It is a remarkable opportunity to witness the heritage that shaped the area.
