Ronnie Greer - 60 years in the biz!

I was delighted to attend Ronnie's big celebration last weekend. Ronnie was supported by his usual partners in crime, namely Anthony Toner on guitar/vocals, Gerry McWhinney on bass and Peter McKinney on drums, while regular guest vocalist 'big' Ken Haddock arose from his sick bed to deliver an outstanding performance! The 'regulars' were also joined by Kyron Bourke on keys/vocals, ex-Yardbirds Billyboy Miskimmin on blues harp and the maestro who is Richie Buckley on sax. What a line-up of world-class musicians! Acclaimed music journalist Trevor Hodgett acted as compere, delivering a witty intro to both sets while never letting truth get in the way of a good story! What a blast!

What a Night for Antoinette!

A fabulous line-up of bands graced the Empire stage last night for a charity fundraiser in memory of Antoinette, partner of Ian "Speedo" Wilson. The night was kicked off by (Professor) Joe O'Sullivan's 'All Clear' band, a perfect start given the charity was the Friends of the Cancer Centre. Compered by Johnny Hero, All Clear were followed by The John Mayall Project, the Ronnie Greer Band, Sam Davidson's Taste, Clouds, the Speedkings and Albert Mills' L I G H T.
A brilliant evening of superb music and a fitting tribute to a wonderful lady. Speedo, you done her proud! ❤❤❤

The John Mayall Project at the Island Arts Centre, Lisburn

I was introduced to 'British' blues in 1967, long before their invasion across the pond. In November 1968 John Mayall's Bluesbreakers played the Whitla Hall, QUB, with Mick Taylor on guitar and John McVie on bass. I as blown away and that was the start of a livelong love of the blues.

The John Mayall Project is the brainchild of Gordon Thompson and Albert Mills. Together with Terry Rice on sticks and the brilliant Ted Lynch on guitar they have been turning heads for some months now. But when they have guests like Billyboy Miskimmin on blues harp and Ronnie Greer on guitar the performance is electric, and so it was at the Island Arts Centre, Lisburn a week ago.
The set list list was interesting in that the second half covered the entire "Beano" album, and some say this might limit the shelf-life of the project. Not so, I say, as there are many more great Mayall albums and 'A Hard Road', 'Crusade' and 'Blues from Laurel Canyon' immediately spring to mind.
Keep 'er lit lads!
