📍Hull, East Yorkshire.

For my first photo of 2022 I revisited the conveniently placed footbridge at the west end of the Daltry Street flyover in Hull to capture some light trails in the late afternoon rush hour.

📍Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire

I am really glad I took this photo because the location has changed significantly in the two years since I took it. All that remains of the former power station are three of the cooling towers. The remaining five cooling towers, both chimney stacks and the turbine hall have all since been demolished to allow the site to be re-developed.

🔍
At the point at which the M62 and A1(M) intersect we see Ferrybridge Power Station. Looking up the A1(M), the M62 crosses over the bridge and beyond is the colossal power station which dominates the scene and the nearby houses.

There has been a coal fired power station at Ferrybridge since 1917 although the one we see opened in 1966 and was the third to be built on the site. In its heyday it had a generating capacity of 2000 megawatts which is enough to power all of nearby Leeds.

The site closed in March 2016 as coal was no longer seen as environmentally sustainable or economical to use to generate electricity.
This photo was taken in October of 2019 the day before four of the remaining seven cooling towers were demolished, changing the view forever.

📍A Monument to Vimto, Manchester.

🍇🍈🍓🥤

🔍🔍
Manchester is famous for many things! One of those things is the much-loved soft drink that is Vimto.

The distinctly purple drink was first created on this very spot in 1908 by John Noel Nichols who was a wholesaler of herbs, spices and medicines that saw the market opening for soft drinks, due to the temperance movement and the passage of the 1908 Licensing Act. It was originally sold under the name Vim Tonic, which Nichols shortened to Vimto in 1912.

Vimto combines the juice of grapes, raspberries and blackcurrants, each in a 3% concentration, which is then flavoured with a selection of delicately balanced herbs and spices to create the iconic beverage.

The new drink proved to be a huge success and became so popular that production had to be moved to much bigger premises in nearby Salford. Its popularity continued to grow rapidly -initially beyond Manchester, then overseas - and is now enjoyed across the planet.

Manchester remains very proud of Vimto and in 1992 this carved oak sculpture was proudly installed where the drink was first concocted, paying homage to a distinctly British drink on the very spot where it was invented.

📍Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

One of the highlights of 2021 for me was returning to the stunning West Highlands of Scotland. This was one of my favourite photos from my short visit to this magical area.

The instantly recognisable Glenfinnan Viaduct is located on the Mallaig extension of the West Highland Railway and opened in 1901. The viaduct, along with others on the line, was designed by famous engineer Sir Robert McAlpine who was nicknamed "Concrete Bob" for his innovative use of mass concrete.

Glenfinnan Viaduct is also famous for appearing in many films and TV shows over the years, perhaps most notably it’s use Harry Potter movies along with various other locations on the route between Fort William and Mallaig.

A daily steam service, known as “The Jacobite” runs from Easter until October, in addition to the regular service train between Glasgow Central and Mallaig, for tourists and is said to be the most spectacular rail journey in the United Kingdom. The 1935 built LMS Black Five steam locomotive can be seen accelerating off the viaduct returning to Fort William with the morning “Jacobite” service with the northern shores of Loch Shiel visible in the distance.

Glenfinnan Viaduct also features on £10 notes issued by the Bank of Scotland.

📍The Kelpies, Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies (shape-shifting water spirits), located between Falkirk and Grangemouth in central Scotland. They each weigh 300 tonnes and are the largest equine sculptures in the world.

The two sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project.

The Kelpies are also a monument to horse-powered heritage across Scotland.

The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and opened to the public in April 2014. The site is open to visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are illuminated using a variety of different colours at night making these breath-taking sculptures even more spectacular.

📍 Nuba Survival, Oxfordshire

This haunting sculpture is made all the more powerful by its odd location. It is adjacent to a dilapidated barn, surrounded by the expanse of a remote field in rural Oxfordshire. There are no signs leading to the striking sculpture or plaques explaining its meaning.

The artwork, depicting two giant skeletons in an embrace is titled ‘The Nuba Survival’. It was created by sculptor John Buckley following a visit to the Nuba Mountains in southern Sudan.

Buckley lived in the region from 2000 to 2001 as part of the Nuba Rehabilitation, Relief and Development Organisation. Thirty years of fighting has left the indigenous tribes living in the Nuba Mountains on the edge of survival..

Buckley was struck by the resilience, despite their suffering, of the people he met and created this incredible work to call attention to their plight.

A few shots from the Driffield funfair last week...

The small fair normally visits the East Yorkshire town in September but instead visited about a month later this year in October. It was great to see the rides and other attractions back on Cross Hill car park for a few days this year following an understandable absence in 2020.

📍Hull Fair, East Yorkshire

Hull Fair is one of Europe's largest travelling funfairs that visits the Yorkshire city of Hull every October. The fair is one of the city's biggest traditions, as well as one of its oldest, having reached its 700th anniversary in 1993. The event attracts well over 200 rides,
countless food stalls and many traditional fairground games each year as well as several thousand visitors each night.

I visited the fair on Tuesday evening to soak up the incredible atmosphere and attempt some long exposure photography. Here are my three favourites...

📍Falkirk Wheel, Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world!

It is located in central Scotland and connects the Forth and Clyde canal with the Union canal. Until the 1930s the two canals were connected by a series of eleven locks that would have taken most of a day to pass through. During the 1930s the flight of locks fell out of use which eventually lead to the closure of the Forth and Clyde canal entirely. At the end of the 20th century, it was decided to reinstate the Forth and Clyde canal and reconnect the two waterways, as part of the Millennium Link Project, with the innovative wheel as an inspiring symbol for the new Millennium.

The Falkirk Wheel opened in 2002 and takes just four minutes to lift a boat 24 metres between the two waterways.

📍Eggborough Power Station, North Yorkshire.

Eggborough power station was a 2000 megawatt plant located close to the M62 motorway at the southern tip of North Yorkshire and is somewhat of a local landmark and can be seen from many miles around. When operating at maximum output, it was able to generate power for up to 2 million homes.

Construction at Eggborough began in 1962 with the facility gradually commissioned over three years between 1967-1970.

Eggborough was ideally located to take advantage of the local coal fields as well as receiving foreign coal brought in through the Humber ports.

The station was expected to close in 2016 but lasted until 23rd March 2018 when the last of the four generators was taken offline from the National Grid and the power station ceased generating.

Many of the smaller structures have already gone but at around 8am on 1st August 2021, four of the eight cooling towers were demolished in a controlled explosion. The remaining structures on the site will also go the same way, but on a later date.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Lockington Rail Disaster in which 9 people, 8 passengers and one van passenger, were tragically killed when the 0933 Bridlington to Hull train stuck a van on the ,then open, level crossing at Lockington (between Driffield and Beverley) on the 26th July 1986.

Following the accident, the UK Government commissioned a comprehensive review into the safety of open level crossings. This review sparked the removal of virtually all open level crossings from the railway, replacing them with a much safer design for both rail and road users.

The Disaster remains the largest loss of life on an open level crossing in the country.

A memorial stone, located in the nearby town of Driffield, remembers all those who sadly lost their lives in the crash as well as the emergency services who attended on the day.
