Meet the Eastern grey squirrel โ one of the most adaptable and widespread tree squirrels. Recognisable by its grey fur, bushy tail, and white underbelly, this species thrives in both urban and forested environments. Active year-round, grey squirrels are diurnal, meaning theyโre most active during the day, especially around dawn and dusk.
They play an important role in their ecosystem as โaccidental forestersโ by burying nuts and seeds, many of which they never retrieve, allowing new plants and trees to grow. They also communicate using a variety of vocalisations and tail movements to warn others of predators or assert territory.
Fun fact: Eastern grey squirrels can rotate their ankles 180 degrees to climb down to trees headfirst!
