Blast Beach, Seaham
This is Blast Beach, part of the Durham Heritage Coastline, and notable for several reasons the most obvious being that the cliffs are of magnesian limestone and have an incredible texture of friable coarseness to them. Dawdon Colliery, first opened in 1907 and once the largest colliery in Europe, at its height produced over 1 million tons of coal per year and the resulting 2 1/2 million tons per year of spoil from the colliery and the Seaham Harbour blast furnace was dumped directly onto Blast Beach. Much of this has now been cleaned up but there is still evidence along the foot of the cliffs. The "alien" landscape created by the spoil on the beach was used in the opening scenes of the film Alien 3 to represent the surface of the alien planet.
