As Remembrance Sunday approaches, this morning’s reflection felt fitting to share. 🌹
The silence said more than words ever could.
The winter dawn had barely broken when I set out that January morning, my breath misting in the frigid air as I climbed the hillside above Sheffield. The landscape stretched endless and grey, the kind of morning where earth and sky seem to merge into one seamless shroud.
I had gone out that day chasing winter light, just seeking solace in the wild, empty places where the noise of the world falls away. But as I crested the ridge, struggling against the biting wind, I found him.
A lone soldier, standing eternal watch over the valley below.
Forged in simple, honest lines, a figure cut from steel, standing for all who never came home. He stood with his rifle at rest, gazing out across the hills perhaps he once knew. At his feet, brilliant red poppies blazed against the monochrome world, the only color in that grey expanse, as vivid as the memories they left behind.
The inscription read: “There but not there, lest we forget.”
The figure’s emptiness made it somehow more human. You could almost imagine him exhaling into the cold, waiting for dawn to break. In that moment, the biting cold, my aching legs, the difficult climb, it all faded. I stood beside this silent guardian, and I understood. He represents them all: the farmer’s son, the factory worker, the schoolteacher; ordinary people who became extraordinary through sacrifice.
The dark, heavy clouds rolling across the sky seemed fitting. This sentinel doesn’t need sunshine and warmth. He stands in the difficult weather, the harsh conditions, just as those he represents once did, keeping watch as Remembrance Sunday approaches, a permanent reminder of the lives given in service.
The wind picked up then, tugging at the poppies. I lifted my camera.
I took this photograph not just as an image, but as a promise; to remember, to honor, and to ensure that their silent watch continues through our witnessing.
They were there. They are not there. We will not forget. 🌹
