The Falkirk wheel officially opened in 2002 and remains the world’s only rotating boat lift.

Built as part of the Millennium Link project, the wheel reconnects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, replacing a flight of 11 locks that were dismantled in the 1930s.

The structure stands around 35 metres high and rotates using surprisingly little energy, carrying boats between the two canals in a slow 180-degree rotation.

Part engineering project, part modern Scottish landmark, the Falkirk Wheel has become one of the country’s most recognisable pieces of contemporary architecture.

At the heart of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, St Giles Cathedral has witnessed nearly 900 years of Scottish history unfold around it.

Known as the “High Kirk of Edinburgh”, the cathedral played a central role in the Scottish Reformation under John Knox during the 16th century, helping shape the future of Scotland’s religious and political identity.

From royal events and unrest to quiet moments beneath its famous crown spire, St Giles remains one of Edinburgh’s most powerful historic landmarks.

The Mythical Kelpies of Falkirk.

The Kelpies rise from the Scottish landscape like ancient guardians of steel and folklore. Inspired by the mythical water spirits of Scotland, these towering sculptures stand more than 30 metres high and are a tribute to the powerful working horses that once shaped the nation’s canals and industry.

As you walk up the gates of Linlithgow Palace look to your right and you'll find these plaques… and to think you’re standing at the birthplace of a royal bloodline that still sits on the throne today.

These plaques trace the direct line of descent from Mary, Queen of Scots… all the way through to King Charles III.

Born at Linlithgow Palace. Crowned queen at just six days old after the death of her father, James V of Scotland.

Reigned England: 1603–1625

Father of Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria
1819–1901
Reigned: 1837–1901
One of Britain’s most influential monarchs. Her reign shaped the Victorian era and the British Empire.

Edward VII
1841–1910
Reigned: 1901–1910
Brought the monarchy into the modern age after Victoria’s long reign.

Queen Elizabeth II
1926–2022
Reigned: 1952–2022
Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

King Charles III
Born: 1948
Reigned: 2022–Present

It’s incredible to think this entire royal line connects back to one Scottish palace… and one tiny baby girl born here in 1542.

Scattered across the glen are stone circles, burial cairns and standing stones that seem to speak to one another across the landscape. The Nether Largie stones are believed to align with the surrounding monuments and possibly even lunar events, leading many archaeologists to describe Kilmartin Glen as one of the most significant prehistoric ceremonial landscapes in Europe.

What strikes me most is the silence. The stones stand alone in open paddocks, weathered by centuries of wind, rain and frost, yet they still carry an unmistakable presence. There’s a heaviness to them… almost as though they remember something we have long forgotten.

The surrounding landscape only adds to the feeling. Rolling ground rises and falls gently beneath your feet while forests gather around the edges of the glen, partially concealing the monuments from view. In certain light, especially early morning or late afternoon, the stones seem less like ruins and more like guardians watching over the valley.

Standing amongst them, it’s impossible not to ask questions.
Why here?
How were they moved?
What ceremonies took place beneath the moonlight?
And what knowledge did these ancient people possess that allowed them to align stone, sky and landscape so precisely?
