Food as art. It’s a well known fact that we eat first with our eyes, so making food look good is so important and a huge part of any food photographer’s job. That is also why we have food stylists too, of course, though some of us are also very adept at styling. Raw food such as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables is very much taken for granted and often overlooked but it can look beautiful and be wall art worthy. Like this crab. Looks simple, but took some time and prep with the reflective surface, ice and the right lighting.

Food photography? Is that a thing? - I’ve lost count of the number of times that people have asked me that. Where they think the images they see on TV, billboards, packaging and online etc come from I’ve no idea. Sure you can take a quick mobile pic BUT .... if you want food images that really sell, you need professional imagery.

Photos like these don’t just happen. I don’t just plonk some product down and take a few quick picks and the job is done. There’s a huge process and a great deal of knowledge and know how that are behind every single image.

Apart from all the kit (and there’s a lot of it) and a big studio (and the bills that go with it), there’s years of learning that go into each and every image. How to compose and dress the scene, because styling an image is so very important, how to light it, the angle or angles to shoot from, the camera settings and then finally the editing. That’s without the planning that goes ahead of this and setting up the studio so that everything we might need is on hand.

So yes, Food Photography is very much a thing, and a real skill. It’s held to be one of the hardest photographic genres and it very much is. You can’t go from shooting weddings one day to shooting food successfully the next, not well anyways. It’s a very complex thing, I think that’s why I love it so very much.

These are some cheese images I shot for Doddington Dairy, I adore cheese, it’s my favourite food.

Another day and I’m off to another shoot. In a world of stock photography and AI it’s good to know that people still value real imagery.

It’s so important and of course it gives a business authenticity and that’s very valuable.

Better still for businesses in Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside, it’s possible to be tap into funding from BIPC and have your photoshoot fully funded.

This was me on site recently with a BIPC client, Nurtch in Ashington.

This is the face of a Labradog who's busy supervising a Pie Shoot and who has just realised that none of the pies are destined for him to test!

My darling Henry has been on his very best behaviour today and truly deserves a medal for restraint. His supervising came between snores, because its very tiring work you know! - which got very loud at times.

I know that 'feel' as I couldn't sample either and goodness they looked and smelt delicious!! But I can't do gluten .... Imagine being in a full on pie shoot where you could sample the mouthwatering goodies except you can't ..... And the edits await ....

Bliss! Sitting in the shade (because it’s 80 degrees in the shade) on bank holiday Monday - what’s not to love? How is your weekend going?

How is your bank holiday Monday going? We opted for staying home and eating in the garden. Such a fantastic day and so rare to get a bank holiday like this!

BBQ lunch and now coffee in the shade as it’s way too hot in the sun. We have 80 degrees in the shade right now!

Henry is sitting right behind my chair sensibly in the shade at last. He wanted to toast in the sun earlier doh! He cottoned on fast though!
