Does this look familiar?🤔

It’s the Lemington Glass Cone, and is thought to have been built in 1797 - making it around 230 years old.

Many locals pass this iconic brick structure every day, with its stature blurring into the normality of every day life - but perhaps we should pay it a bit more notice.

It is the only glass cone remaining out of four from the Lemington Glass Works. The other 3 were demolished after a handful of decades in 1837, meaning the outlier we still see today has outlived its compatriots by a further 180 years or so. It is also one of only four glass cones remaining in the UK - and is a Grade II Listed Building.

Tunnels and flues were built beneath the cone, allowing fresh air and oxygen to be channeled in to the central furnace, helping to feed the fire. The tall 35-metre height of the cone acted as a chimney, creating a considerable updraft, which helped channel fresh air from under the cone, and also in pushing smoke and toxic fumes upwards and out the top of the cone.

Considerable temperatures were needed in the central furnace to melt raw materials and shape the glass. Smaller auxiliary furnaces were on the periphery of the cone to store glass at less extreme temperature, so that it didn’t cool rapidly and break from thermal shock.

Did you know about the history of Lemington’s Glass Cone?
