Prep not Portraits

One thing I don’t believe in? Turning your wedding morning into a rushed portrait session.

For me, that part of the day is all about the experience.

It’s the excitement building as hair and make up comes together. It’s the chats, the laughter, the happy tears and the moments with the people you’ve chosen to have around you. It’s your mum helping with the dress, your bridesmaids keeping the nerves at bay and those first reactions when everything finally feels real.

You’ve invested in an amazing hair and make up team because you want to feel incredible on your wedding day. The morning is their time to work their magic without me adding pressure or creating unnecessary stress.

Of course I’ll capture beautiful photographs throughout the morning, but I’m not going to whisk you away for a bridal portrait session before I have to leave for the ceremony.

There’ll be plenty of time for gorgeous portraits later.

Your wedding morning should be enjoyed, not rushed. 🤍

Do you agree?

Tomorrow, I get to head back to one of Northern Ireland’s most beautiful wedding venues and I genuinely can’t wait.

Matthew & Emily will be saying their vows in the stunning Moon Garden at Drenagh Estate and after a few years away, I’m so excited to be back there again.

I met up with these two for their pre wedding session recently and it only made me look forward to their wedding day even more.

They’re such a lovely couple and spending a little time together before the big day is always one of my favourite parts of the journey. It helps us get to know each other, settles any nerves about being in front of the camera and gives me a glimpse of the connection I’ll be capturing on their wedding day.

Tomorrow is all about celebrating their story and I can’t wait to document every moment.

Here are a few favourites from their pre wedding session before the real celebrations begin ❤️

Some weddings just feel completely and unapologetically them ❤️

Gráinne & Shea’s was one of those days.

From Gráinne’s love of horses to Shea’s passion for rally cars (a different kind of horsepower altogether 🏎️), their personalities were woven throughout the day, and I absolutely loved that.

The best weddings aren’t about following trends or doing what everyone else is doing.

They’re about celebrating your story, your people, and the things that make you who you are.

A few days ago, I delivered their full gallery and it was such a joy reliving the day all over again as I put the finishing touches to their images.

The big moments.

The little moments.

And all those in between moments that tell the story of a wedding day far better than I ever could.

Thank you both for trusting me to capture such a special chapter in your lives. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of it.

If we’ve not met before, this pretty much sums me up 👋

I’m Melissa.

Wedding Photographer. Hype Girl. Dress Fluffer. Mum of 3. Wife. Diet Coke lover. And someone who still gets ridiculously excited about wedding days.

This September marks 15 years since I started my photography journey, which is honestly hard to believe.

What began as a mum with a camera has grown into a career that’s taken me to hundreds of weddings across Northern Ireland and Ireland and introduced me to the most incredible couples along the way.

This past week alone I’ve photographed three beautiful weddings, and as I sit editing all those memories, I’m reminded why I still love what I do.

Not because every wedding is perfect or every timeline runs to plan, but because every couple has their own story.

The nervous excitement on a wedding morning.
The happy tears.

The laughter.

The hugs.

The moments in between that become the memories you’ll treasure for years to come.

Fifteen years later, I still get excited packing my camera bag before a wedding, and I still feel incredibly grateful that so many couples trust me to capture one of the biggest days of their lives.

I’ve another busy wedding weekend ahead on Friday and Saturday, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way ❤️

If you’re looking for a relaxed wedding photographer who’ll capture your day naturally and probably fluff your dress a few times along the way, I’d love to hear all about your plans.

One thing I always come back to after a wedding day is this.

Your portraits are only a small part of your story.

The real magic is everything in between. The morning excitement, the ceremony emotion, the laughter during speeches and all those little moments you don’t always notice at the time.

I’ve just shared a new blog talking about this and why I believe wedding photography should always focus on the full story of your day, not just a handful of portraits.

If you’re planning your wedding in Northern Ireland or anywhere across Ireland, you can read it on my website.

What a day 🤍

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of capturing Paris & Paul's wedding and what a beautiful day it was from start to finish.

After a lovely ceremony in Attical, we made our way to Fairy Glen in Rostrevor for some portraits before heading on to the Four Seasons Carlingford where the celebrations were in full swing.

These two were an absolute dream to photograph. So relaxed, so happy and completely wrapped up in each other. Just the way it should be.

What made the day even more special was how welcome everyone made me feel. From the minute I arrived until I left, I was treated like one of the guests and that never goes unnoticed.

Here's a little preview from their incredible day. I can't wait to share more soon ✨

One of the biggest worries couples have before their pre wedding shoot is what to wear 🤍

And honestly? You do not need to go out and buy completely new wardrobes or stress over perfectly matching outfits.

The right outfits can make such a difference in helping you feel relaxed, confident, and comfortable in front of the camera and that is exactly when the magic happens ✨

I have shared all my best tips on the blog including:

• Colours that photograph beautifully
• What to avoid wearing
• How to coordinate without matching
• Outfit ideas that still feel like YOU

If you have a pre wedding shoot coming up, this will help take all the stress away 👇

A Sunday afternoon up at Flagstaff with Ciatriona & Karl 🤍

These two absolutely smashed their pre wedding shoot and this session was only 30 minutes long ✨

I think pre shoots are such a good way for couples to realise that on your wedding day, you really don’t need to disappear for hours for photographs.

Most people tell me before their shoot that they’re awkward in front of the camera or nervous about posing, then within about 5 minutes they realise it’s actually just really relaxed and easy going.

That’s exactly how I want your wedding day to feel too.

Loads of natural moments, a little guidance when needed and photos that still feel like you, without spending half the day away from your guests.

Flagstaff was the perfect spot for this one and now I’m so excited for their wedding this summer at Bellingham Castle 🤍

Honestly cannot wait for this one.
