Taking photographs is not a crime

Taking photographs is not a crime Increasingly we are seeing photographers being abused, questioned, & 'inconvenienced' by Police and

OK, so lets start with the basics - yes, of course you can do lots of illegal things with a camera - in much the same way that any of us could go out and do something illegal with a flip-flop, a dustbin or a duck! - but that is not what this is all about - it is about the underlying current of mistrust in people who chose to carry, or use, a camera day to day (y)

We welcome your links, stories,

and opinions on the current position for photographers, individuals that are, in the vast majority of cases, not terrorists, perverts, or law breakers - just photographers doing what they enjoy. We would also appreciate it if you would share our page, please pass the word to your facebook friends and contacts, thanks! We would also, of course highlight that we are not ‘anti-police. ‘anti-security’ etc, the vast majority of these individuals are conscientious, honest individuals doing their best to do a good job. What we do object to is those that misuse, misinterpret, or otherwise fail to play by the rules. To regard all those that we come in contact with as ‘evil’ would be like hating all Doctors because of Harold Shipman, or all singers because of Justin Bieber. I was sat discussing the joy, and challenges, of night-time photography with someone a while back - and it put me in mind of this wonderful passage from Hungarian-French photographer Brassaï, (seen here in a 1932 self portrait) who explained his personal technique for timing long exposures of Paris by night...

Remembering Alice Austen, who died on this day, June the 9th, in 1952.

Austen was one of America's earliest and most prolific female photographers.

Primarily working in Staten Island she is best known for her street photography and her intimate depictions of women's lives and relationships in the Victorian era.

You can read more about her life and works via the link that I'll add in the comments section.

Today's camera (well three cameras) from the collection - the Zenit Fotosnaiper (Photosniper)

The Fotosnaiper range was first introduced by GOI in the 1940s - with production later switching to KMZ.

Originally designed for Soviet military use the concept was expanded into a range of consumer/export models which became popular with wildlife and sports photographers (indeed the one on the middle step here at one time belonged to the head photographer of a leading UK motorcycle magazine)

Supplied in a steel case the kits included a 300mm lens, a 58mm lens, a range of filters, tools, reloadable film cassettes, the trigger/gunstock assembly, and a pair of leather straps to allow the case to be worn as a backpack.

Often described as 'Spy cameras' I think that it would be a brave spy that tried sneaking around with a camera kit that that weighs almost 6 kg (15Lbs) and is about the size of a chest freezer 🤣

Shown here are a 1980 FS-3 version (based on the Zenit E) and two FS-12s (one from 1985 and one from 1988) which were based on the Zenit 12 - a major upgrade on the earlier model as it allowed TTL (through the lens) metering.

('Peggy' the cat is a non-standard upgrade)

Happy Tuesday all, and if you were out and about with your camera today - hope it went well 🙂

Remembering Anna Atkins - botanist and photographic pioneer - who died on this day, June the 9th, in 1871.

Atkins is widely acknowledged as the first person to publish a book containing photographic images - a series of cyanotype photograms - and is also thought by many to be the first woman to produce a photograph.

You can read more about her life and works via the link that I'll add in the comments section. .....

Today's camera from the collection is this Japanese manufactured Fujifilm X100f.

Released in 2017 it was the company's fourth-generation fixed lens X series camera with an APS-C sensor.

Both looking, and handling, like a high end 35mm rangefinder the X100 range quickly gained almost cult status.

It has a 35mm equiv. F2 lens, a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder and fixed 3" LCD.

It has a 24.3MP CMOS sensor and all the 'bells and whistles' you expect from a high-end Fuji.

This particular example has been carried high, dragged deep, subjected to extremes of heat and cold, captured nature, covered demonstrations, and has never missed a beat - indeed it is one of the digitals that most often accompanies my wanderings.

It is a camera that truly deserves it's great reputation.

Happy Monday all, and if you were out and about with your camera today - hope it went well 👍
