New blog post from Elisha Miller featuring helpful tips from Laura Gardiner and Allys Miller

I am predominantly known as a headshot and portrait photographer, I also train models to be able to pose in any situation without the fear of looking bad in front of the camera, to specialise in one field of photography and not be the jack of all trades I originally believed that I would have to be

Use the environment to compliment, frame and enhance your images, not distract, hinder or destroy. Mixing mid day sun with a strobe as a fill means you can shoot anytime of the day if used correctly. Do not limit yourself with the time of day, adapt and use what you have at your disposal.

When the background is plain it is all about the model, but put them in a scene even a simple one like this and you have to work together to set the mood, to tell your story and to show emotion. Posing is one thing getting the emotion is another, bring them together and you begin to create something special.

You get a model, grab your camera and start clicking, “yeah baby, move it, that’s it.” Is this what you think we do, point, shoot and say crap words of encouragement? There are infinite poses a model can do, there are at least 85 angles just for the head alone, add various expressions we are then talking 1000s. Same with the body, not all poses work for all people that is the beauty, we are all different. So next time you look at an image, did we just point and shoot? Lighting, colour, camera settings, exposure, style, hair, makeup, posing then just maybe, take that shot, oh and then the retouch, filing, printing the list goes on.

As photographers we all have our own way to edit the images in post, some do very little others a lot, there is no right or wrong way it is your style, but you do not need to airbrush every image to an inch of its life removing the true character of your subject. Photoshop, lightroom, filters etc are all there to enhance not destroy, leave those finer details, take that extra min or two to do your edit right, you can’t rush perfection, create what you intended from the start. Happy photog, happy client.

Getting the framing and crop just right may happen in camera but you can always perfect it in post. The look of a shot can be greatly enhanced just by this one thing, don’t be a sloppy photographer, you took the time on everything else, spend a little extra time in post to finish it off.

Photographers learn their craft over a space of years, not hours, it is not just get a model and point and shoot, camera settings, lighting, angles, having an eye for the finer details that can make or break an image this is what we do, what may look simple actually has several key components required to create the effect you are after.
