Some people spend their working day at a desk.

Others spend it helping people move, stretch, recover, strengthen and feel more at home in their own bodies.

The best brand photographs usually start there.

Not with a headshot, but with the work itself.

A few photographs from some sessions with local practitioners.

A little update…

Over the last year, my work has naturally split into two camps.

One is branding and editorial photography for businesses, founders and organisations.

The other is weddings.

Rather than trying to fit everything into one account, I’ve decided to give weddings their own space.

So if you’re here for business photography, nothing changes.

If you’re planning a wedding, or simply enjoy photographs of beautiful places, family, friends and all the best bits, you can now find me over at Ellie McCallum

It felt about time they had a space of their own.

I notice things for a living.

Not in a profound way. More in an “ooh, that’s interesting” sort of way.

Take this building at Hartham Park. Most people probably walk past it without giving it much thought.

I couldn’t stop looking at it.

The texture of the wood, the scale of it, the way it sits out in the open countryside. It felt bold, characterful and slightly unexpected, rather like Sadie.

That’s often how I choose locations for a photoshoot. Not because they’re fashionable or particularly Instagram-worthy, but because they feel right for the person standing in front of them.

The people matter.

The place does too.

Most people don’t want photographs, they want to feel understood.

The best business images aren’t really about business at all. They’re about personality, where you work, what matters to you and how you want people to feel when they arrive on your website or Instagram page.

For this shoot, the garden, the stone walls, the notebook on the table and even the dog became part of the story.

Because people connect with people. Not stock images. Not perfect poses. Not photographs of someone pretending to work on a laptop.

Just images that feel human, honest and recognisably you.

It’s exactly the sort of work I love creating.

Interesting people. Beautiful places. Photographs that feel like you.

A small note for future couples.

If you’re hoping for a wedding day where everyone behaves impeccably, nobody cries, children sit quietly and your friends remain calm and dignified throughout, I’m probably not your photographer.

I love a beautiful portrait as much as the next person, but after photographing weddings for a few years I’ve noticed something. The photos people come back to aren’t always the ones you’d expect.

It’s the bride peering through a window trying to catch a glimpse of the ceremony. The child who gets completely swept up in the excitement. The friend who laughs so hard they can barely stand up. The parent desperately trying not to cry.

The conversation by the bar. The look across a room. The moment that lasted half a second and almost nobody else noticed.

Those are the photographs that tell the story. Not just what the day looked like, but what it felt like to be there.

And thankfully, those moments rarely stick to the plan.

8am Global approached me recently to create a new set of images for their business.

The brief was simple: corporate photographs that didn’t feel corporate.

It was a firm no to the usual laptops and phones. Instead, they wanted photographs that showed personality, relationships and the character of the business, alongside the beautiful setting of Hartham Park.

I’d hoped we’d spend a little more time outside, but the weather had other ideas. A few days earlier it had been glorious sunshine; by the time the shoot arrived it was grey and drizzly.

Thankfully, when you’re working somewhere with interiors this good, that’s not really a problem.

It’s also a good reminder of why choosing the right location matters. Weather changes, plans adapt, but a setting with plenty of character gives you options and helps tell the story whatever the forecast decides to do.

This shoot was a first for me, working for the Royal Osteoporosis Society in Bath.

They needed a bank of images for their website and social media, with a brief to reflect their colour palette while keeping everything feeling fresh, welcoming and approachable.

As part of the day there was also a fabulous little cake bake with Val from Bake Off and plenty of her delicious creations to photograph (and sample!).

The team were really pleased with the results and I had an ace time. It’s always satisfying to tick a completely new brief off the list and work with an organisation doing such important work.

Because when the weather has reverted back to weird and wet again, it’s worth remembering that last week it was summer.

We were queuing for ice cream in West Bay when I spotted this view through a gap between the food huts.

I’m always on the lookout for a scene that grabs my eye. An interesting location does so much to elevate a photograph.

If I’d spun around 180 degrees, the view would have been food huts, large bins, seagulls and LOTS of people. Facing the other way, though, it was all quiet seaside idyll.

A reminder that sometimes it’s just a matter of looking in the right direction.

When people enquire about a shoot, they often tell me they’re awkward in photographs.

They worry about what to wear, whether they’ll know what to do and if they’ll look natural.

After photographing people for a few years now, I’ve realised that the photographs that feel most like someone are rarely the most polished ones.

They’re the ones that contain personality, character and all those small details that make somebody recognisable to the people who love them.

A laugh, a look, a habit.

The way they sit, walk, smile or hold themselves. The things that make them them.

And for me, that’s always the goal, not just creating a flattering image, but capturing something that feels unmistakably like the person in front of the camera.

The way they throw their head back when they laugh or the expression they pull without realising.

Those are usually the photographs people come back to.

When people think about wedding photography, there’s often an assumption that you need an incredible backdrop.

A dramatic landscape, a grand venue, somewhere spectacular.

But some of my favourite wedding photographs have been made in places that simply felt right for the couple.

A staircase they’ve spent the morning walking up and down, a quiet corner of a venue, a field beside their dog, a patch of evening sunlight.

The location matters, but not because it’s impressive.

It matters because it’s part of the story.

I’m always looking for places that help tell that story rather than compete with it.
