The Osprey's Patrol

Against a cloudless Dorset sky, male osprey 5R1 glides with effortless grace. Hatched at Poole Harbour in 2024 to the pioneering pair CJ7 and 022, 5R1 represents a new generation of ospreys re-wilding England's south coast. I was lucky enough to have him hunting for an extended period right in front of me! He made several dives toward the water, though bailed out each time so didn't get his prize while I was there, but it was amazing to see!!

What lies beneath

Beneath the surface of Kimmeridge Bay, the sunlight filters through the water, just about making a blue velvet swimming crab visible on the sea bed. It stayed tucked into the crevice among the swaying seaweed but put just enough to see it and get a photo!

The Sparrowhawk’s Watch

In the golden light of sunset, in the Corfe Mullen heathland, a sparrowhawk pauses between hunts. Alert and ever watchful, it scaned the landscape from its pine perch, just long enough for me to get a photo, before taking flight once more.

A Dartford Warbler clings upside down to a slender stem, its unusual pose set against the soft colours of the heathland blooms.
