Conwy Camera Club

Conwy Camera Club Conwy Camera Club is the oldest photographic society in North Wales and currently the largest. Originally it covered the whole of the region.

Conwy Camera Club is the oldest photographic society in North Wales, established in 1945. It’s now one of the largest in Wales, with over 80 members whose photographic interests and experience cover a wide spectrum. Many photographers have been inspired to join after viewing the club`s displays of prints in Conwy town centre, changed at the start of every month since 1998! See the Now Showing sect

ion of the website for details. The club has a friendly and social atmosphere, with photography regarded as a shared interest rather than a matter for studious concentration! Some of our activities are aimed at helping members to improve their work, explore new branches of photography and understand techniques like composition and exposure. At the same time there’s plenty for our more experienced members to enjoy, including lectures on digital imaging and talks by expert photographers. The club meets on Tuesday evenings at St Johns Methodist Church Conwy Rose Hill St, Conwy LL32 8LD

starting at 7.30pm. The season runs from September to May. Our weekly evening meetings are supplemented by meetings of Special Interest Groups, which cover several branches of photography including Portraiture, Action and Creative. The groups help members explore their shared specialist interests, as well as providing help and encouragement for those who are keen to develop their expertise in these subjects. See the Special Interest Groups gallery on the website for recent work from the groups. We hold 10 internal competitions each year, judged by an external photographer (usually a member of another camera club). Members learn a lot from the judges’ comments on their own work and the other images entered. We also enter work in external competitions with other clubs in the area. Our philosophy is that it`s not your equipment that counts but the way you use it. By looking at other people`s pictures, club members receive inspiration and understand how to improve their own photography. The club also has an expanding archive of members’ work from the 1930s to the present. See our Archive gallery on the website for a few of the archive images.

Conwy Camera Club held a Light Painting workshop as part of the Telford 200 Creative Collective. Participants captured eye-catching visual effects on the Conwy Suspension Bridge, which reaches its bicentenary in July 2026.

The Creative Collective, throughout November, involved a wide-ranging programme of arts events in Conwy. Results from literary and visual arts workshops will be displayed as part of the Telford 200 celebrations next year.
Conwy Camera Club contributes to many aspects of community life. The Light Painting event supported the Creative Collective and gave several people their first taste of the use of artificial light to illuminate features or create patterns during long exposures.

The event was led by club member Ian Greenwood, who runs Light Painting workshops on the Llŷn Peninsula. He was assisted by Gareth Williams, who had kindly travelled all the way from Aberdaron to help make the event a success.

Camera club prepares for 6th September Open Day
Conwy Camera Club is throwing open its doors to the public on Saturday 6th September with a special display marking the club’s 80th anniversary.
The Open Day will take place from 10am to 4pm at St John’s Methodist Church, Conwy. Admission is free.
The event will present a wide cross-section of work by club members and results from some of the club’s community-based projects. The club, founded before the end of WW2, will also pay tribute to some of its past members with a selection of images from the club’s extensive archive.
Audio-visual sequences in the projection room will include - on the hour, each hour - a presentation of ‘80 Years, 80 Faces’ – results from the club’s project to photograph one local person born in each year since the club’s founding.
At half-past each hour there will be a chance to see photos taken by Conwy Cubs when the club organised a Creative Photography workshop for them in June. This presentation includes a unique audio memoir by Conwy-based composer Hazel Mary, who made sound recordings during the workshop.
Another projected sequence will showcase stunning wildlife photography by numerous club members, while Aneurin Phillips’s breathtaking island landscapes will transport viewers to the Arctic, the Antarctic and contrasting places in between.
The centrepiece of the open day will be a display of new prints which members have created as they prepare for the start of the new season of Tuesday-evening meetings on 9th September.
Cards featuring photos by club members will be on sale, and staff from Cambrian Photography of Colwyn Bay will be on hand to answer visitors’ questions.
Bob Gresty, chair of Conwy Camera Club, said: “This is the first time the club has staged a one-day show since it celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2015. The variety and quality of the images which will be on show across the different displays are a testament not only to the individual photographers but also to the club’s ethos of supporting, encouraging and inspiring members to keep improving their photography.”
Conwy Camera Club is the oldest in North Wales and currently the largest, with around 90 members.
