Really struggling to find the angle with this one. There’s been so much destruction and landscaping around Cyffty Mine that it’s difficult to imagine what once stood here. In the original picture, the only part of the engine shaft that can now be seen was probably 2–3 feet below the surface.
Cyffty Mine lost its engine house in the mid-1960s. Some may have seen it as an eyesore, but not me. To me, it was a signature of the toil of the miners and a lasting reminder of a Welsh industrial legacy.
There was a time when places like this represented real industry, ambition and clout on the world stage. Generations of men worked these mines, and communities were built around them.
Today, all that remains here is a dusty car park and a few scattered footings.
It’s hard not to wonder what we’ve lost — not just in stone and brick, but in the physical reminders of a huge part of Wales’ history. 🥺
