DAY 2: What exactly is APERTURE?

Welcome back to Learn Photography in 30 Days, my FREE photography series throughout September!

Today we’re tackling one of the most important camera settings to understand: aperture.

Your aperture is simply an opening inside your lens that allows light into your camera. Changing its size can also change how much of your photograph appears sharp and create those lovely blurred backgrounds.

Aperture is measured in f numbers, also known as f stops.

Some people get confused at the start regarding the f numbers.

A Small f-number = a WIDER aperture. Think f/1.8, f/2.8 or f/4.

This allows in more light and can create a shallow depth of field. Perfect when you want your subject sharp with a lovely blurred background.

Larger f-number = a SMALLER aperture
Think f/8, f/11 or f/16.

This allows in less light but can give you a deeper depth of field, keeping more of your photograph in focus, from the foreground to the background.

So you might choose a wider aperture like f/2.8 for a portrait, but something like f/8 or f/11 for a landscape where you want much more of the scene in focus.

Come back on Day 5 and I’ll show you how to set the aperture setting on your camera.

Tomorrow we look at Shutter Speed. We’ll discuss how to freeze movement, avoid unwanted blur and even use blur creatively.

DAY 1: Let’s get you off Auto Mode!

Welcome to Learn Photography in 30 Days, my FREE photography series throughout September!

Over the next 30 days, I’m sharing one short lesson every day to help you understand your camera, improve your photography and become more confident about the settings you’re using.

And we’re starting with Program Auto Mode also known as P Mode.

If you’ve been using full Auto because aperture, shutter speed, ISO and all those buttons feel a little overwhelming, P Mode is a brilliant next step.

Your camera still takes care of most of the technical decisions for you, including choosing your aperture and shutter speed, but you start getting more control over settings such as ISO, white balance, focusing and exposure compensation.

Think of it as a stepping stone between letting your camera make all the decisions and gradually taking more creative control yourself.

📷 TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

Find P Mode on your camera and take at least 10 photographs with it today.

Don’t worry about getting everything perfect. The whole point of the next 30 days is to learn by actually USING your camera.

👇 Let me know in the comments if you’re joining me for the challenge!

Tomorrow on Day 2 we discuss aperture and how it can help you create those lovely blurry backgrounds.

Want to finally learn how to use your camera properly? Give me 30 days.

Starting tomorrow, I’m launching Learn Photography in 30 Days, a completely FREE series right here on my socials throughout September.

Every day, I’ll share a short, easy-to-follow photography lesson designed to help you understand your camera, improve your photography and become more confident about the choices you make when taking a photo.

We’ll start with the basics and build from there, covering a variety of photography related topics.

These include the different camera modes, exposure settings plus lots more.

Then on Day 30, we’ll finish by looking at what it actually takes to become a professional photographer.

You don’t need the latest camera. You don’t need loads of expensive equipment. And you definitely don’t need to understand all those buttons and dials just yet!

Just bring your camera, give me a few minutes each day and let’s see how much you can learn during September.
