“Evening Dave, we wanted to send a HUGE thank you for being an absolute hero on our big day!! You were such a joy to have around, so chilled and with the patience of a saint.

The day was everything we had dreamt of and more. We feel so privileged to have had you part of our day, and felt in such safe hands.

The photo’s are unreal, you are so blooming talented!!! Wow wow and WOW!!! Every emotion of the day just came back, you total legend!”

I absolutely loved photographing Nina and Emily’s wedding at the stunning Brympton House in Somerset.

Some great news last week - I picked up a story award from Vicky and James’ incredible 2 day wedding at Sudeley Castle Weddings - which amazingly is my 100th This is Reportage award!

🤯

Still trying to get my head around that!

What started as a passion for documenting real moments has taken me on an incredible journey, and reaching this milestone feels pretty special. Every award represents a couple trusting me with their story, and for that I’ll always be grateful.

A huge thanks to the judges too!

A awesome day full of laughter, and amazing food that was constantly pursued by the dog (courtesy of Henny) …and ping pong!

A local church, a family home, and a celebration that couldn’t have happened anywhere else. Perfect!

What a year 2025 was, being named ‘photographer of the year’ with The Masters of UK wedding photography as well as with This is Reportage & IWPOTY

I’ve always considered ‘the Masters’ as one of the best awards in the UK and it was the first legit award I won in 2017 (as opposed to awards where ‘everyone wins’) and it’s so great that all styles are celebrated rather than some other awards that only champion what’s on trend that year. As my style mostly falls into ‘documentary story telling’ most of my winning images are that, but I love being able to enter some ‘couples portraits’ too as I also love taking those.

After coming 2nd 3 years in a row (something I was also massively proud of) I entered for the first time in a few years in 2025 and managed to get 26 awards throughout the year which secured the top spot amongst stiff competition.

I was so unbelievably chuffed and proud to have been awarded photographer of the year 2025 and story teller of the year 2025 with This Is Reportage at the end of last year. It’s an accolade I never thought I’d achieve, however, having come so close a few years running I kept pushing myself in the hope that one day I’d get there!

Of all the awards out there, This Is Reportage means a lot to me, not just because they are the hardest of all to win, but because the core values are that nothing at all can be staged - only real unplanned moments captured at weddings can be entered, and in a world of ai and style over substance - I think this is more important now than ever.

Anyway, I don’t like talking about myself, so I’m going to ‘borrow’ the kind words of Alan Law (founder of TIR)…

…David Scholes has just achieved something truly extraordinary: winning both our This is Reportage Photographer of the Year and our Storyteller of the Year titles for 2025. To take either award is incredibly difficult. To take both in the same year is almost unheard of — a rare combination of vision, timing, consistency and sheer documentary instinct at the very highest level.
With a remarkable 22 Awards – including 13 Story Awards – across the year, David sits deservedly at the top of our just-announced Top 100 Photographers in the World 2025and Top 25 Storytellers lists. It’s hard enough to win one Award; to win twenty-two is a level of sustained, world-class storytelling very few photographers ever reach.
This also marks David’s fourth time being crowned our Storyteller of the Year, a record that speaks for itself. Story Awards are notoriously tough to win: 15–20 images, all from the same wedding, judged as a cohesive narrative. To excel at that format once is an achievement. To dominate it year after year is something else entirely — a testament to David’s ability not only to see moments, but to absorb an entire day and translate its truth into sequence after sequence of meaningful, unposed, human storytelling.

It was such an honour being one of the judges for photography category again this year. Winning photographer of the year at the National awards in 2024 was one of the highlights of my photography career, and I can’t wait to see who takes the crown at tonight’s awards!

I was so happy to get a ‘story award’ from and wedding at the amazing in the final round of the year - one of 3 story awards that got me ‘story teller of the year’ for the 4th time and photographer of the year for the first time!!

Samantha and Harry’s wedding was a real highlight for me and I enjoyed photographing it so much that I really wanted to get a story award from it, but this was actually the third time I had entered it. After changing the first image and re arranging a couple of other shots
to make it flow better it finally got the nod!
