Short-eared Owl (URN: 7089) - Salisbury Plain

Salisbury Plain is a good place for Short-eared Owls because it has large areas of open grassland, rough pasture, and low vegetation, which are the habitats these birds prefer for hunting. The plain supports healthy populations of small mammals, especially voles, which are the owls’ main food source.

Short-eared Owl (URN: 708*) - Salisbury Plain

The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) often perches on fence posts, gate posts, and other low vantage points so it can watch for prey across open ground. Perching also allows the owl to rest while conserving energy between hunting flights. Unlike many other owls, Short-eared Owls are frequently active during the day, so they can often be seen sitting openly on posts before flying low over the ground in search of food.

Common Snipe (URN: 6087) - Slimbridge, UK

The Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) is a medium-sized wading bird with brown, black, and buff streaked plumage that provides excellent camouflage. It has a very long, straight bill used to probe soft mud for food. It is usually found in wetlands, marshes, and damp grassland, where it often stays well hidden.
Any ideas on why its fanning its tail above its head? From memory it adopted this posture then a seagull flew close overhead.

The Red Kite is an elegant bird in flight, known for its long wings and distinctive forked tail. It glides smoothly on air currents with little effort, using subtle tail movements to steer and change direction. Its graceful flight and ability to soar for long periods make it one of the most striking birds of prey to watch.

Common Magpie (URN: 7086)

Common Magpies often ride on the backs of Cows to find food more easily. The cow disturbs insects as it moves, and the magpie may also eat parasites from the cow's skin, making this a useful feeding strategy.
