So many of us who run our own businesses have multiple strings to our bow.

Working out how to capture all of those aspects of a business in one shoot isn’t always practical.

Sally Goodwin is a private midwife and is on my 12 month program, which gives us the freedom to focus on a different aspect of her wonderful Private Midwifery business each time we meet.

Sally’s Mama cafe which she runs at Bottle & Thyme, is going from strength to strength. It was amazing to see how important this community is to the women who attend.

For the 100th time I’m going to say, I really wish I'd had Sally when I had my babies.

How is it even possible that I haven’t shared photos from this shoot in July yet!?

In a way it’s good, you can see how brilliantly Tom and Emily Martin of Peak And Stone Bakery in Chesterfield have been using them over the past few months.

It’s rare to meet people this talented and passionate about what they do. I’m incredibly happy to be photographing them as their business goes from strength to strength.

If you haven’t tasted the sourdough from Britain’s No.1 sourdough champion, you need to sort that out!

Not everyone’s images are for public sharing.

Sometimes the photos become part of a body of work that are far more important.

It’s been a privilege to work with the team at The Elm Foundation over the past 12 months.

Each of those shoots has been different, each one has brought me closer to understanding the incredible work they do there.

In a fast moving, increasingly negative tech world, people who make things with their hands, and can show their human processes, are standing out from the crowd.

Most potential customers still see a finished product and don’t consider the hours that go into making it unique and special.

When you can show them how you created it, you become part of the brand. You always were, but your customers just didn’t know it.

I've realised something about all the strongest women I work with.

They trust me implicitly.

You might think it’s the other way around. That strong, in control women would want to run the shoot. It is absolutely not the case.

I love working with Susanna. She’s chosen me carefully, and trusts that I know my job just as well as she knows hers.

We talk through the plan, Susanna tells me everything that she needs, and then when I say ‘please will you just pop into the window in the changing room’ of course she just gets on and does it.

I think that trust comes from experience, my own confidence is what I’m doing, and creating a really safe, relaxed space to create.

Sometimes when we’re thinking about a location for your shoot, the most overlooked thought is ‘where makes you really happy’.

Not always, but often it’ll align perfectly with your brand and message.

Earlier this year I totally restyled my studio.

Before this it had been a plain white space, pretty similar to most natural light studio space.

I decided that it was time to create some real personality there, dedicated to photographing business owners who wanted more than simple headshots.

The beauty of this space is that gives a variety of looks in one totally private, relaxed space. We can add your own accessories, style it up, or strip it down to plan walls.
