For anyone who wonders about the editing side of SERIAL and what my software setup is like, I use Davinci Resolve Studio (19 currently… darent update mid-project!).
For colour grading I’d watched loads of YouTube videos over the least few years but this one by Davinci colourist wizard Darren Mostyn was gold and this Edit page node tree setup is how I work… if works really well for me and helps keep every type of grade element clean from the rest - colour temperature, contrast, exposure… all separately editable and switchable.
With often around 1,000 clips in projects like SERIAL, having to do this to every one could be a time consuming process but I tend to grade on the fly… so, as I cut together scenes post-shoot, I will try to grade the edit at the same time, usually leaving only some overall fine tuning at the end of the project when all the clips are in and the timeline, reasonably firmed up and locked in (whic for me is waiting for writer/director Chris to give a fairly final thumbs up). Also, Davinci has the really useful ability to identify clips in the timeline that have the same source file and can apply the colour grading from a single clip to all the clips in the timeline from that same source file… saving masses of time on lengthier work!
Anyway - well worth a watch and a highly recommended grading option if you use Davinci, and a great reason and lesson to encourage Davinci being your NLE of choice if you don’t!
