Burnhope Cricket Club is a community focused club based in the village of Burnhope, County Durham, in the northeast of England.

Burnhope developed as a mining village in the early 1850s with the opening of Burnhope Colliery (which operated until 1949). Like many colliery villages in Durham, cricket was a key part of community and welfare life, often tied to "Colliery Welfare" clubs that provided recreation for miners and their families.

Cricket in the broader County Durham area has deep history, with early matches recorded from the 1750s onward, though organised village clubs like Burnhope emerged more prominently in the 19th century amid industrial growth.

Penshaw Monument: A stunning landmark with deep roots in Northeast history! Perched dramatically on Penshaw Hill in Sunderland (visible for miles around), this iconic Greek-style temple is officially the Earl of Durham's Monument. It was built in 1844–1845 as a memorial to John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham (nicknamed "Radical Jack"), a passionate reformer, MP for County Durham, and Governor-General of British North America.

Lambton died in 1840, and locals raised around £6,000 by public subscription to honour his legacy — especially his influential Durham Report, which shaped how Britain governed its colonies with greater self-rule (a key step toward modern Commonwealth ideas).

Designed by Newcastle architects John and Benjamin Green as a half-size replica of the ancient Temple of Hephaestus in Athens, it's a striking Doric temple made from local gritstone. Funding ran out before they could add a roof or interior walls, giving it that open, dramatic "folly" look we know today. The foundation stone was laid in a grand Masonic ceremony in 1844, drawing huge crowds.

Now cared for by the National Trust (since 1939) and a Grade I listed building, it stands 21m (70ft) high on a hill 136m above sea level.

If you’ve never tried a Shepherd and Shepherdess Mixed Grill then you are missing out! - this has to be the best Mixed Grill around by far.., and at a great price as well!

I personally choose not to have black pudding or the garnish to reduce waste as I don’t like them personally and I’d only leave them on the plate.
