Toads galore! Forest ditches are excellent breeding ground for toads especially when larger lakes are full of carp (they eat the spawn).

At Woorgreens nature reserve the alder trees have been 'coppiced to waste' which creates masses of moist refuge they need for the rest of the year.

Buzzards ate a lot of toads here last year so hopping thru cover affords some protection.

Nightjars are scarce enough but also very vulnerable nesting on the ground - This was a nest from a Forest nature reserve this summer.

When dogs are expected to be on leads on a nature reserve its for the befit of these amazing creatures.

Vigilante signage 🤩

Quite impressed at the effort some visitor has made at Clarkes Pool Meadow SSSI nature reserve!

They designed and laminated a sign for the empty sign holder 👍

Clearly they also don’t appreciate a nature reserve being used as a dog exercise field.

Dormice are a protected species and few and far between, by the time we value them, they may be gone forever.

Nest boxes are installed for them on nature reserves mostly to help with surveying their population trends in suitable habitat. A good quality woodland with lots of deadwood, diverse trees and shrubs of all ages, ensures plenty of flowers, seeds, caterpillars and other creepys for them to eat as the seasons change before a long winter hibernation.

NEVER OPEN ANY NEST BOX THAT IS NOT YOUR PROPERTY OR ON YOUR PROPERTY - DORMICE HANDLING REQUIRES A LICENCE

7 day old nightjars born on yet another Forest nature reserve 🥰

It may be hard to comprehend but quite honestly it's the flails, bonfires, chainsaws, cattle and herbicide that have primed these new habitats into such wildlife friendly spaces.

Every year the reserves get just a little bit more complex (interesting) and create yet more opportunities for wildlife to move in.

The goal isn't just scarce species such as nightjars but they do indicate how every part of the food chain below them is working to good effect.

A delight to see this tiny juvenile adder - and for scale those are blades of grass - breeding is confirmation that this Forest open habitat is delivering everything Adders need. The challenge is fragmentation of their habitat as they don’t fly! A mosaic of exposure and cover helps them and their prey thrive.
