Unseen & In-Between

Unseen & In-Between There’s always something interesting to discover, if you just look for them ..

And often they are right on your doorstep
Hope you enjoy seeing the things I find whilst I walk along canals & footpaths & discover forgotten buildings, nature & history

Just up the road from the ruins of St John the Baptist was this beautiful church.
Christ church, Llanwarne.

A delightful church with traditional stained glass windows.
It is home to a bell that originally hung in the old church, that now stands in ruins, until 1939.

The grounds were beautifully manicured.
And, as is often seen in old churchyards, tall trees, lining the pathway.
You can tell the community really cares in this village.

Stumbled across this lovely ruin of a church in Llanwarne.
St John the Baptist church.

It’s being made safe courtesy of fundraising by locals & those who want to preserve buildings like these.
The stonemason was roasting on the top of the tower while we were there.

Always great to see these buildings being preserved for generations to come & not just flattened.
History teaches us so much.

Whilst out for a drive in the sunshine the other week, we came across Belmont Abbey, just outside Hereford.

Connected to a monastery, run by English Benedictine monks.
Unfortunately we couldn’t get in the Abbey, but I hear it’s worth looking at.
Very peaceful, vast, cemetery with views across fields to the side.
And huge trees lining the pathway.

Has anyone else visited here?

An early morning walk along Stroud canal a couple of weeks ago.
Very peaceful
Got to see the swan family doing their early morning exercise.

A walk round into Cainscross where old shop fronts look well preserved

And back round onto the canal path with a quick hello to a beautiful horse.

We went exploring the Tidenham Tunnel.
Fantastic walk between Chepstow & Tintern, but we only did a short section

We parked at Tidenham church, unfortunately it was locked up
And followed a footpath next to the churchyard before joining the Wye Valley Greenway.

The tunnel is home to bats, so it’s controlled access throughout the year.
They have fabulous metal gates adorned with bats 🦇 and the tunnel has low level lighting
No use of torches or flash photography is allowed

It’s 1081 metres long, chilly & a bit drippy in parts

We walked through, into the sunshine before turning back & retracing our steps.

This walk follows an old railway line & there’s signs of the old railway in many places you look.

We tried a short walk along the Stroud canal.
Started at Bowbridge along towards Chalford, but a closed footpath made us turn back.

After a foot injury this was a good test. It’s definitely improving.

And we got so close to this beautiful heron
Not at all bothered by us standing near by & I just managed to capture him as he flew away.

1st proper trip out now the weather is better.

A mini walk, due to a foot injury, along the Whitminster section of the Stroud canal.
The renovation is almost finished & the wildlife is thriving

It was so peaceful. It’s going to improve throughout the year.

And very close to a few places to eat & drink:
Highfield Garden centre for a stop off for lunch or a coffee
Fromebridge Mill
Saul junction cafe
The Warren cafe at Attwools

A visit to Prinknash bird and deer park , now it is reopened.

Really well laid out with an accessible path all the way round

Deer, sheep, goat & donkey food is available at the entrance & trout feed available at the small coffee shed near the lakes

Watch out for jealous geese as you hand feed the deer & donkeys who aren’t in a hurry to get out of the way of the gate!

Peacocks, a variety of chickens, geese, ducks of all varieties, white ostrich, black swans & doves are all happily pottering & swimming around. Not bothered by the visitors at all.

Beautifully put together with a play area for the kids too

The path does get quite steep after the donkeys, which is the only way out, so could be a struggle if mobility is an issue.

Well worth a visit & always worth supporting a local venue.

Wi******er cathedral

The resting place of Thomas Thetcher. He died “after contracting a violent fever after drinking small beer when hot in 1764”

Fantastically ornate stonework. Everywhere you look there’s more to see

Whilst we were there they had “The Sun” exhibition. At night it’s lit up from the inside, showing all the craters.

The resting place of Jane Austen, with her official gravestone not even mentioning her work as an author. An extra brass plaque was added years later by a family member

A section explaining the work of William Walker, the man who saved Wi******er Cathedral by carrying bags of cement into the waterlogged basement every day for 6 years, to seal the area enough to allow the stone masons to go in & secure it.

A mesmerising Anthony Gormley sculpture stood in the flooded crypt.
Depending on the amount of rain, depends how much you can see.

Well worth a visit!!

Salisbury snippets

The city has renovated the old water mill into bars & shops
It’s such a joy to have a river running through a town or city, I wonder if the residents now take it for granted.

The clock tower still stands on the site of the county gaol. The land was sold to the infirmary in 1822.
And sold, for a nominal £5, to the council in 1892 purposely to erect a clock tower.
A competition was announced in 1892 to design an illuminated clock tower, with costs (not including the clock face) not exceeding £400.
The winner won £20.

Historic buildings repurposed as shops, cafes & homes

A church tucked away in the town centre, but a surprisingly elegant interior, very well maintained.
