TICKED OFF?
I think we've all had days like this puffin.
Everything is going to plan, you're focused on the job in hand, and then something small appears that completely steals your attention and consumes your time, it could be a difficult email, delayed project a spreadsheet that suddenly develops a personality (is that possible?) or a demanding client
For this puffin, it was quite literally a tick or 2.
What I love about wildlife photography is that it often captures moments that feel surprisingly familiar. We tend to share the perfect images, the graceful poses, dramatic landscapes, and picture perfect moments. But nature is real, messy, and occasionally irritated.
The tiny details often tell the bigger story.
As photographers, we spend countless hours chasing perfect light, sharp focus, and ideal compositions. Then a puffin scratches its face, looks thoroughly fed up with life, and creates a far more relatable image than anything we planned.
Perfection is impressive, but authenticity is memorable.
A puffin having a genuinely "ticked off" moment.

Whilst not old enough to have been around when breakdancing arrived in the UK this squirrel certainly knows how to bust some moves when traversing the tree canopy 🐿️

While most of us are asleep or raiding the fridge, the humble Badger is out doing what it does best, digging, foraging, and generally minding its own business.
Badgers live in family groups called clans and occupy underground homes known as setts. These aren’t casual little holes either. Some setts have been used and expanded for generations, with tunnels, chambers, and multiple entrances. Basically… an underground housing development, just without the planning permission debates.
Despite looking like a small tank with fur, badgers are quite particular about their living conditions. Bedding made from grass and leaves is regularly replaced, and they keep latrines away from the sleeping areas.
Clean house. Separate bathroom.
Honestly, they’re more organised than many humans.
Their favourite food is earthworms, especially after rain when the worms come close to the surface. A hungry badger can consume hundreds in a single night.
Mostly nocturnal and rarely seen, the Badger carries on its nightly routine quietly beneath our noses… proving that some of Britain’s most fascinating wildlife prefers to keep its social life strictly after dark.

The concentration of a bomb disposal expert…
for something he’s definitely going to bury and forget about 14 minutes later.
Red squirrels can hide thousands of nuts across a season, relying on memory and scent to find them again.
This little one looked very pleased with itself… like they just secured the last roast potato at Christmas dinner.
Tiny paws.
Massive tail.
Absolutely zero intention of sharing.

rarely do I use mono for wildlife images but this one is an exception as it was take after dark of a subject that is basically known for being black and white, the widely known but rarely seen badger.

Gentle wander along the canyon to reach this waterfall, a 10 minute walk that wasn't too challenging although muddy and steep in part but I was kitted out with decent boots what I couldn't understand was those wearing Ugg slippers and pure white trainers doing the same,

Watching one of the best known but least seen members of British Wildlife snuffle around looking for an evening snack was wonderful even if a tad chilly at -5 whilst getting images of this and other gorgeous badgers in their natural habitat

Did you know birds of prey hide their food?
This Eurasian Sparrowhawk is mantling, spreading its wings to shield its catch from thieves while it eats.
Under those feathers is lunch, and this sparrowhawk would very much like to keep it that way.
Nature might be brutal, but it’s also brilliant tactically.

Meet the male Eurasian Sparrowhawk living proof that you don’t need to be big to run the neighbourhood.
Weighing little more than a chunky blackbird, this pocket-sized predator specialises in surprise attacks through gardens, hedges and woodland. Short wings for speed, a long tail for steering, basically the F15 fighter jet of the bird world.
Today’s lesson in ecology:
Songbirds feed the hawk, the hawk keeps populations healthy, and nature carries on balancing itsel, even when it looks a bit dramatic when you catch it mid-lunch.
This moment lasted a few minutes.
The light lasted less.
The patience took, well I’ll let you guess that one.
Nature isn’t polite but it is perfectly designed.
Follow along if you enjoy wildlife with a bit of truth, a bit of humour, and the occasional feathered crime scene. ,
