“I didn’t think I could look like that.”

I hear this a lot after shoots, and not because my clients suddenly transform into different people, but because most of them have spent years being far too critical of themselves in photos.

Most of the clients I work with aren’t models or influencers. They’re founders, consultants, doctors, creatives, and business owners- people doing meaningful work whilst juggling a hundred other responsibilities at the same time. They’re often the face of their business, yet the last thing they want to do is stand in front of a camera.

Many arrive saying things like, “I’m awkward in photos,” “I never like pictures of myself,” or “I have no idea what to do.” And honestly, that’s completely normal.

A huge part of my job isn’t just taking photographs. It’s helping people feel comfortable enough to relax into being themselves. No stiff posing, no pretending to be someone you’re not, and no pressure to perform. Just calm guidance, thoughtful planning, good conversation, and creating an environment where you feel at ease.

When this shift happens, you stop focusing on how uncomfortable you feel and start seeing yourself the way other people already see you- capable, credible, warm, confident, and experienced. And the photos reflect that!

The best feedback for me is never just “these look nice.” It’s when someone says, “I finally feel proud to share my photos,” or “I actually feel like these look like me.” Honestly it makes me So happy to see the change in them too!

And that’s the difference! Not just pretty photos, but portraits that genuinely represents who you are and the level you work at, and also a set of photos that you’re proud of!

If you’ve been putting off having your business portraits taken because you feel awkward or unsure in front of the camera, I promise you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. Send me a message or enquire through my website, I’d love to help you create photos that feel genuinely like you.

A lot of professionals think they need to post more online but often, what they actually need is a better set of photos.

I can’t tell you how many brilliant business owners are still using old headshots, cropped group photos, or images that no longer reflect who they are or the level they work at now.

The thing is, people usually see your photo before they ever speak to you, before the enquiry, before the meeting, before the podcast, article, or speaking opportunity.

Whether we like it or not, those images shape first impressions, and the images do the talking for us..so it's important to get it right because people want to feel confidence and trust in the person behind the business.

That’s why personal brand photography matters. It’s not about looking overly polished or posed.
It’s about creating natural, professional imagery that feels like you on your best day.

We all have days we really don’t want to show up online, but having the kind of photos that make you feel proud means you can still show up online instead of avoiding being visible altogether.

And if your current photos no longer reflect the professional you’ve become or the business you’ve built, maybe it’s time to update them!

I offer one hour, half day and full day sessions as well as tailored packages. Send me a message, and we can have a chat to see how I can help make your life a little bit easier.

When my clients start crying (happy tears) and they haven’t even seen the final result 🙏🏽

“I feel like I’ve had therapy today.. you’ve unlocked levels I didn’t know needed unlocking inside me..I didn’t give myself permission to see myself in that light and Zehra just did it.”

Having your photo taken is so much more powerful than most people think. You’re giving control over to someone else to tell your narrative for you. For Aminah this has meant letting go of a fear that came from hating her phot being taken.. but also to giving herself permission to acknowledge the years of academia and graft that has gotten her to where she is today.

I receive a surprising number of enquiries that begin with the same sentence:
“I’ve just been asked for a headshot…”

It’s usually prompted by something exciting like a speaking opportunity, an award nomination, a podcast feature, a company announcement, a press article, or even the launch of a new website.

What starts as a positive opportunity quickly turns into panic when people realise they don’t actually have imagery that reflects where they are professionally now.

Suddenly, they’re scrolling through outdated photos, cropping themselves out of wedding pictures, reusing the same headshot from 2010, or worse, avoiding opportunities altogether because they don’t feel properly represented online.

Your professional image matters far more than most people realise. Not because appearance is everything, but because trust often starts visually. Before someone reads your credentials, hears you speak, or understands the quality of your work, they’ve already formed an impression based on how you present yourself.

People want reassurance that the person behind the business feels credible, polished, and established.
And the truth is, you probably already are those things. Sometimes your imagery simply needs to catch up!

If your current headshots no longer reflect the level you’re operating at, now is the perfect time to update them. Message me to see how I can help.

Are you a woman underrepresenting yourself?

After 21 years as a photographer, I’ve noticed something interesting: brilliant women are often the worst at visually representing themselves.

They downplay themselves. They hide behind outdated photos. They avoid visibility altogether because they “hate having their picture taken” or don’t feel naturally photogenic.
But confidence in photos rarely comes from being naturally photogenic.
It comes from feeling comfortable, guided, and understood. That’s my job!

I’m often told by clients I create a calm, supportive experience helping you feel at ease on a shoot. This means your set of images won’t feel overly posed or performative just an honest reflection of who you are and the level you work at.

And if you’ve quietly been thinking: “I really need to sort my photos out…” consider this your sign… Send me a message and we can arrange a call to see how I can help you.

“I’m super confident in my profession… just not on camera.”

This client said it with a smile, but they meant it, and I hear this a lot, especially from people who are very good at what they do.

So we took the pressure off straight away. No performing. No awkward posing. Just clear direction, gentle pacing, and space to settle. I take away the mental load of how to pose, so my clients can actually enjoy the session.

Halfway through, she smiled and said, “This is actually fun!” That moment matters more than people realise.

Afterwards, she told me they finally had photos they felt comfortable using, instead of avoiding or overthinking every time they needed one. If you’re brilliant at what you do but quietly dread the camera, you’re not alone. And it really doesn’t have to be a big ordeal.

Be honest… does being photographed feel like this for you too?

Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.

One of the things I’m most proud of in my work is the trust my clients place in me. Most of my bookings now come from referrals and returning clients, and that means more to me than any statistic ever could.

When someone invites me into their business to capture their brand, their team, or their story, I want the experience to feel calm, efficient and genuinely supportive- especially for busy professionals who need the process to fit seamlessly into their day.

Testimonials like this remind me why I care so much about both the experience and the final images. It’s not just about great photos. It’s about helping people feel represented, confident and proud of how they show up.

Thank you to every client who continues to recommend my work. Your trust is the foundation of what I do, and I appreciate it deeply.

You never know when your next opportunity will arrive: a press feature, a podcast, or a speaking engagement.

If your next opportunity landed tomorrow, would your photos be ready to represent you?

When Dr. Sidra Khan’s article was picked up by The Daily Mail and Friday Magazine, she already had a set of professional portraits ready to go: confident, credible, and completely her.

That’s the power of having a set of images ready, you don't need to think twice about which photos to use.

If you want to be image ready like Sidra, just get in touch.

You don’t see me on here all the time… and that’s quite intentional 👀

But I’m still very much here! 💗

So, a little reintroduction feels overdue.

I’m Zehra, and I run Portraya, creating personal brand imagery for business owners and professionals who want to be seen, taken seriously, and look like the expert they already are.

I’ve been a photographer for over 21 years now (which still feels slightly surreal to say), and over time I’ve naturally found myself drawn more and more to this space. Working with people who are building something meaningful, who don’t need hype or overproduction… just someone who gets it, and knows how to bring out the best in them.

My approach has always been quite calm, quite considered. I’ll guide you, I’ll probably fix things without you noticing, and I’ll make sure you don’t feel awkward or overposed. Because the goal isn’t to create something that looks good for five minutes… it’s to create images you can actually use, confidently, across your brand.

I’ll be honest, I’ve not been the most consistent person here recently. I’m not really chasing the social media grind like that anymore. But behind the scenes, I’m very much in it… shooting, working with clients, building quietly, doing the work that actually matters.

I think I’ve moved into a space where it’s less about proving, and more about just… being. Doing good work, working with the right people, and letting that speak for itself.

So if you’re new here, hi. And if you’ve been here a while, thank you for being part of the journey as it’s evolved. 🫶🏽

There’s more coming… just not in a shouty way 😌

From wine company owner to sober coach, Alison’s journey is one of strength, purpose, and reinvention.

She told me she’s always hated having her photo taken so it means the world that she felt comfortable, confident, and totally at ease during our shoot.

Alison, you’re an absolute gem. Thank you for trusting me to capture this new chapter 💛
