I'm able to capture the personality of the much loved four-legged member of your family. “I don’t really want to be in the photos.”

I hear this quite a lot. And that’s absolutely fine. You don’t have to pose, look at the camera or even really feel as though you’re having your photograph taken.

And if you really don’t want to be in the photographs at all, that’s absolutely fine too. It’s your session.

But if you’re happy to be included without actually posing for me, sometimes I’ll just include a little bit of you. Sometimes I’ll photograph your dog looking back at you. Sometimes you’ll simply be part of the scene.

And sometimes, while you’re busy with your dog and not thinking about the camera at all, I’ll catch something like that last photograph of Obi with his dad.

Because the relationship you have with your dog is part of their story too. And you can be in the photographs without having to be in the photographs.

Those are very often some of my favourite images.

This is Hector. Coming through!

There are times when I’m photographing a dog and I know exactly the sort of shot I’m hoping for.

And then there are dogs like Hector, who come charging towards me with ears flying, paws everywhere and their own ideas about how the shoot should go.

I love both.

A Tell Tails shoot isn’t about getting your dog to sit perfectly and stare at the camera. We’ll get the lovely portraits too, but some of my favourite photographs happen when I just let dogs be themselves and wait for the right moment.

Hector gave me quite a few of those.

So if your first thought is, “You couldn’t photograph mine, they never keep still”, I really wouldn’t worry. Keeping still is definitely not a requirement.

Don’t write off the oldies.

Peachy is an old girl, but apparently nobody has told Peachy!

A photo session with an older dog doesn’t have to mean just sitting quietly for portraits. We work at their pace, see what they feel like doing on the day, do shorter sessions but more of them.

In Peachy’s case, that included posing beautifully, pottering about with Annette and, when the mood took her, getting all four paws very definitely off the ground!

And that’s exactly why I love photographing older dogs. They’re still completely themselves. They still have their funny little ways, their favourite things and, sometimes, a surprising turn of speed.

These are the photographs that become more precious as the years go by.

Out for a walk with Jake and Indi and their little mate Max.

At just 4kg, Max is rather outnumbered by Indi at 14kg and Jake at 17kg. But nobody appears to have told Max that size is supposed to matter.

He is absolutely the boss man. He’ll quite happily take a bone off Indi and, despite being more than three times his size, she’ll let him!

I love the three of them together. Jake and Indi towering over their tiny mate, while Max carries on in the firm belief that he’s in charge.

And to be fair, I think he probably is...

Same dog. Same photoshoot. Very different Bertie.

I love action photography, but a Tell Tails session isn’t just about getting your dog running towards the camera.We walk, we stop, we play, and I photograph what happens along the way.

Sometimes that’s movement. Sometimes it’s a lovely portrait. And sometimes they wander right up to my camera and give me a face like this.

For me, it’s about coming away with a collection of photographs that actually feels like your dog.

Because they’re rarely just one thing.

I love seeing photographs on a screen, but for me that’s never quite the end of the story. There’s something very special about seeing a favourite photograph properly printed, framed and hanging in your home.

The big photograph of my Jake above my sofa is a new addition and I love it. I call it “Paint me like one of your French boys” (with apologies to the film, Titanic!). I see it every single day, and that’s rather the point.

Wall art doesn’t have to be enormous. It can be one statement piece, a smaller framed photograph, or a collection of images that belong together.

And we can think about that before your photoshoot. If you know there’s a particular room or space you’d love something for, we can talk about what you’d like and plan photographs with that in mind.

Part of a Tell Tails experience is helping you work out what suits your photographs, your home and you.

Because the photographs we love shouldn’t just disappear into our camera roll.

It’s not all about the dogs…I absolutely love photographing horses too.

There’s something very different about photographing a horse. Sometimes it’s the movement and power that catches my eye, and sometimes it’s simply a quiet portrait like this.

No action. No flying ears. No mud being thrown in my direction. Just that face, and quite a lot of hair. 😂

Tell Tails isn’t just for dogs. Horses, cats, rabbits and the other animals who are part of your family are very welcome in front of my camera too.

This is still one of my favourite shots of the Chocolate Spaniel family.

And the bit I love? This particular moment lasted for just one frame.

Swipe through and you’ll see what happened a moment before, a moment later, and then the original frame that became the finished photograph.

Four dogs, all running at different speeds. Their positions, expressions, ears and legs changing with every stride.

There was no “hold that!” By the next frame, the moment had gone.

That’s why I love action photography. I’m watching for that split second when the movement, expressions and composition give me the photograph I’m looking for.

Your dog doesn’t need to perform perfectly for the camera. I don’t need perfect behaviour for minutes at a time.

Sometimes, I just need a moment.

Jake & Indi. My two.

One sensitive soul who likes a quiet life… unless there’s water involved, at which point all common sense leaves the building.

And one who looks like butter wouldn’t melt, while quietly calculating the whereabouts of every squirrel within a three-mile radius.

Completely different. Both very definitely themselves.

And quite possibly the reason I fell so completely in love with photographing dogs as they really are.

Because these are the moments I’ll always treasure most. Not perfect behaviour. Not perfectly clean dogs. Just them.

Wet, happy, slightly ridiculous… and mine.

And that’s what I want to capture for other people too… the expressions, quirks and little bits of personality that make your pet unmistakably yours.

Well, this wasn’t who I was expecting to meet in a coffee shop on Friday… 🐰

Meet Barbara Bunny.

She’s just 2½ months old, a Lop cross Rex, and was casually hanging out in a coffee shop in Cricklade looking ridiculously cute.

Of course, the one time I meet an unexpected model like this, I only have my phone with me. Typical photographer.

Still, sometimes you just have to work with the camera you’ve got, and Barbara was far too gorgeous not to photograph.

Although I’m not entirely sure her ears have decided what they’re doing yet…

Dogs may be regular subjects, but Tell Tails is definitely not just about dogs. I’d very happily have more bunnies (and horses, and anything else with four hairy legs!) in front of my camera!
