“I have several concerns.”

Mostly about when the treats are arriving, why the photographer is still pointing that thing at me, and exactly how long I’m expected to sit there looking handsome.

Fortunately, at a Tell Tails photo experience, your dog is allowed to have concerns. They’re also allowed to wander off, get distracted, refuse to look at me, pull ridiculous faces and generally have their own ideas about how the whole thing should go.

Because that’s usually when I get the photographs that really show who they are.

If you’d love some proper photographs of your dog but think they’d never make a good model, I’d love to prove you wrong.

“You had me at woof…”
“I think we should just be friends.” 😂

This is why I love photographing dogs.

They don’t need to sit perfectly. They don’t need to look at the camera. And they definitely don’t need to do as they’re told!

Some of my favourite photographs happen in the moments in between… a look, an expression or a little interaction that lasts for a fraction of a second.

That’s what a Tell Tails photo experience is all about. Your dog being themselves, while I worry about being in the right place at the right time.

Meet Bear

Bear is currently at DBARC, waiting for someone to decide that this gorgeous face belongs on their sofa.

And he is rather gorgeous.

I had the pleasure of photographing him recently and, with those fabulous ears, beautiful brown eyes and enormous fluffy chest, he certainly made my job easy.

But lovely photographs can only do so much. What Bear really needs is for the right person to see them, fall for him and give him the home he’s waiting for.

So please share him. His person might just be scrolling past your post.

Is my crazy dog suitable?

Someone once warned me that their dog was “a lot”.

He arrived with the enthusiasm of a small tornado. He pulled on his lead, ignored several carefully selected treats and had absolutely no interest in sitting where we’d planned.

He was also funny, affectionate and completely devoted to his person.

So we changed the plan. We walked. We played. We let him settle in his own time and photographed the joyful chaos as well as the quieter moments that followed.

Your dog doesn’t need perfect recall or impeccable manners. They can stay on the lead. We can take breaks, change direction and work at their pace.

“Crazy” dogs are very welcome here.

I captured some Behind the Scenes footage of Bramble on the second of her “Watch me Grow” experiences. Puppies change so quickly!

Here was still plenty of puppy mischief, curiosity and that wonderfully expressive little face. But also now, glimpses of the dog she’s becoming.

That’s the lovely thing about photographing puppyhood more than once. The changes happen so gradually when you see them every day, yet they become wonderfully clear when you look back.

Tell Tails’ Watch me Grow follows a pup across three experiences over 12 months, preserving each fleeting stage from the tiny beginnings when they fall asleep on their feet, to the nearly grown dog who will accompany you on your adventures together.

People often ask if it’s hard photographing rescue dogs.

Sometimes, yes.

Some have had a rough start. Some are confused. Some are frightened. Some arrive with huge feelings and no idea where to put them.

But then you see them start to relax. You catch the photograph that really looks like them. You later hear they’ve been adopted.

And that is exactly why I keep doing it.

For 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing dogs who are waiting for their next chapter.

I never stop hoping each photo helps that chapter begin. Cooper here has found his forever sofa. With a face like that I'm not surprised!

Photographing rescue dogs also means seeing the work that goes on behind the scenes.

The patience. The care. The cleaning, feeding, walking, training, comforting, assessing, worrying and hoping.

A rescue centre isn’t just a place where dogs wait for homes. It’s where people work incredibly hard to give them the best chance of finding the right one.

My part is only a small part, but I’m very proud to have been doing it for The Diana Brimblecombe Rescue Centre for the last 10 years. I'm also very grateful that two of my border collie girls over the years have come from DBARC. DBARC do an amazing job and without them, I would have been without Meg and Indi.

“Rescue dog” is not a personality.

It doesn’t tell you whether a dog is gentle, daft, anxious, bold, loyal, clever, silly, shy, busy, or secretly convinced they are a lap dog despite all evidence to the contrary.

That’s why the photographs matter, even if you're having a bad hair day.

They help people see past the label and look at the dog in front of them.

The eyes. The expression. The energy. The little details that make someone think, “There you are.”

That’s what I’m always trying to capture, whether it's at the rescue centre or photographing your pet in a private commission session with you.

Some dogs shout for attention. Others barely whisper.

The quieter dogs can be the ones who need the photographs most. The ones who hang back, who aren’t quite sure yet, who need a bit of time before their real character starts to peep out.

Those are often the sessions that stay with me.

Because when a nervous dog gives you that first soft look, or lets a little bit of themselves show, it feels like a small doorway opening.

And that doorway might be enough for the right person to step through. The Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre are brilliant at matching the right dog with the right human and building confidence with the pups. This is Blake who was really quite shut down. He found his forever home in 2019.

I'm used to photographing nervous or quiet dogs. It just means that we spend a little more time together, getting to know each other. It might also mean a longer lens if they really struggle but we usually work through their worries and get happier looking images than this one of poor Blake!
