Traffic stops and sirens ring while people across Warsaw (and Poland) commemorate the start of the Warsaw Uprising, which took place at 5:00 pm on 1st August 1944.

The Uprising had been planned to last a few days only, until the expected arrival of Soviet forces stationed near Warsaw, but as that didn't happen, the insurgents fought the Germans for the total of 63 days.
