As always, artificial light often dictates when I raise the camera to my eye.

I spotted this person gazing into the shop window, illuminated by the light spilling onto the street. Yet even with all that light, their identity remained hidden.

Sometimes that’s enough to make me stop and take the frame.

Cardiff in XPan.

I went out recently with one restriction - shoot everything in the XPan ratio.

I really enjoyed approaching the city this way. That much width forces you to think differently about where you place people and how you use the space around them.

I found myself looking for the things I naturally gravitate towards anyway: artificial light, colour, layers, isolated figures and little moments of movement.

Here are a few of my favourites from the walk. Interested to know which one stands out to you.

Bus Light

When I’m walking at night I’m always on the lookout for people being lit by artificial light. Buses are great for this.

So when I spotted the driver being lit by his own bus, I had to take the shot.

Worked out pretty well.

Missed Focus

Completely missed focus on this one.

But looking at it afterwards, I actually preferred it. Sometimes the mistakes work.

I was hiding from the rain. She was braving it.

She came straight towards me and… boom. Got the shot.

'Screen Time'

The huge illuminated screen caught my attention first. I found the composition and waited for someone to enter the frame. The fact he immediately checked his phone made the title pretty obvious 😂
