Freespirit Images is a Wales based landscape photography business, running photography workshops and courses around the UK. As well as the very popular workshops, one-to-one tuition is available - novices welcome!! The Freespirit Images business and tuition focus mainly on landscapes , but is, by no means, limited to this area. Natural History, Close Up (macro) photography, outdoor scenes and even

ts are also photographed and tutored with great enthusiasm. Started in 2002 by the highly experienced Nick Jenkins, Freespirit Images has run workshops for Light & Land Photography Tours and Workshops, HF Holidays and Tatra Photography Workshops, covering many locations overseas and in the UK. The workshops are available in the UK and especially Wales, which, for photographers, has some superb and relatively undiscovered locations. Presentations are given to groups, clubs and societies by Nick, with the approach adopted being one of sharing; both knowledge and experience, as well as locations for excellent landscape photography. Being awarded the Associate-ship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 and the Associate-ship of the Welsh Photographic Federation in 2005 underpins Nick's expertise. He is also currently the Chair of the judging panel for the Associate-ship of the Welsh Photographic Federation. In addition to the workshops and on-to-one courses, Freespirit Images photographs for calendar companies, as well as for Alamy and fotoLibra stock agencies. Photographs are also offered for sale as prints, canvasses and in many other forms.

As some of you may be aware I have run workshops from here before with great success and will be lining up some superb locations!
The only caveat is where we are going to be in October COVIDwise. I will be monitoring this closely and will keep in touch.
If this sounds rather good please email me expressing your interest and I will reply with more details.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

The notes were drafted as a help or aide memoire, to all those who love photography.
They are, to be clear, aimed mostly at outdoor and landscape/nature photography but are full of practical help as well as ideas and thoughts aimed to inspire you.
If you would like a set please message me with your email address and I will gladly send you a set.

The Difference between RAW and.Jpeg

1. RAW

RAW files can be considered as a "negative photograph". The camera/lens see and record what is in front of them and commit this to the memory card.as is, with no amendments or tweaks. Effectively it is faithfully reproducing whatever the camera/lens are pointing at.
Because the RAW setting is capturing all that it sees with no editing the image will take up more memory space on the card than a .jpeg will. For example, I shoot with a Nikon D850 camera and many of my landscapes are shot using a 24-70mm lens. Here I show the number of photos that can be shot on a 64 Gb memory card - with both RAW and .jpeg.

RAW - 633 imagesjpeg fine quality - 1,500 imagesjpeg best quality - 2,000 images jpeg normal quality - 2,900 images

This of course will vary from camera to camera and the space or capacity of the memory card you choose to use.

My choice is always RAW format as I later have the ability to make some changes to each photo reflect my taste and then save it as a .jpeg large file, whilst keeping the RAW file in case I may want to re-use it.

2. .JPEG

So, why .jpeg? Well, to start with, the capture speed of the image is faster so if you are a photographer of weddings, parties, sport, street scenes etc then the camera can step in and give you that faster read/write speed and especially if you are capturing fast action. You can set your camera to C (Continuous) and those .jpegs will be edited and written to the card more quickly.
Jpegs also come in different file qualities and can be set in the camera:
FINE - hi quality
Normal - medium quality
Basic - basic quality

Be aware that once a .jpeg is shot it can be harder to correct exposure mistakes on your software further down the line (unlike RAW), and is less able to accept amending highlights and shadows. These tasks have already been adjusted in camera for you.
In addition, contrast and colour saturation have already been set during the in camera process allowing you very little, if any, room for manoeuvre.

3. IN CONCLUSION

As you can see, both settings have their pro's and con's. There is no right or wrong. It is for you, the photographer, to decide what is best for you, and specifically, what subjects you prefer to photograph. Remember, you can also select in camera, both of these options, but of course this will take more time to write to the card but does allow you to edit and amend using the RAW file.

It really depends so much on what you shoot and the degree to which you wish, or are able, to processs/edit/amend later.

For me, my preference is RAW as most of my work revolves around landscapes and natural history (or sometimes commercial work). I then process/edit the shot to my satisfaction and save as a .jpeg. I DO, as mentioned, always keep the RAW file so I can come back to it later if needed.

Hi all,
I realise it is still very early days yet and the VIRUS! is still with us, so this is a very rough plan/suggestion for the future.
As many of you will know I run workshops:
-for 1:1's
-for small groups
-for large groups.
The workshops/tutorials are aimed at really helping both beginners and 'not so beginners' understand firstly how the camera works and what it can do and secondly, and maybe more importantly, HOW you can get compositions YOU are happier with.
So, if any of you are interested in the help I can offer please do drop me a reply and I will message you back.
For you to know, I am Cardiff based but happy to travel reasonable distances.
My fee is £60.00 for 3 hours (which can overrun ;) )
I offer slow, repeatable ideas and advice to let you feel more relaxed. And yes, I am qualified as an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society.
Hopefully to those of you who are interested I would be delighted to reply ro you
Best wishes and, yes, stay safe!

Message to all those who have followed this page and those who have just joined.
I have a set of Beginner Notes on how to get best use out of your camera and learn how to be more creative with your photography. The secret plan is to wean you off AUTOMATIC!!
Cameras. CAN be quite daunting at first - and yes, You Tube tutorials are available but they mean you have to rewind from time to time to get clarification.
So.............not too long ago I compiled a set of 'Nick Notes', aimed at seeking to make understanding just how the camera works that bit easier - and can work for you - and gave copies to all my workshop clients and 1:1 clients too.
If you would like a copy - all plain english and around 14 pages - I would be delighted to email you one.
I cover f-numbers, the histogram, camera modes (A,M,S and A - all are translated to english.
All I need is your email address - and I will forward a copy to you.
I would love it if, after you have read it and if it was helpful, you could perhaps post a quick line under here to say so? You don't have to but it would be a big help to me and my Freespirit Images business.
Very best wishes and ,yes, STAY SAFE!

Here's a thought for ALL photographers on here - whether top notch pros or budding 'upcomers'.
With the rules etc requiring us to stay at home I initially felt that I was not going to be able to carry out my hobby, passion, profession and that was a major issue and disappointment.
But...whilst it is also the case for me that my income has taken a battering my love and enthusiasm for photography has rocketed!
1. I am taking more photographs of Spring (flowers, hedgerows etc) than I have ever taken before - and they are having the effect of making so many facebook friends happy!!
2. I am trying new subjects - photographing birds - landing, taking off, eating, taking a bird bath.........
These changes of direction from my usual landscapes have not only inspired me and helped me through this - not at the end yet I know - BUT they have taken my mind off so many of the social media posts and posters that just wallow in bad news day in and day out.
This new and exciting subject range has also taught me to learn new techniques.
1. Use a range of lenses I had not frequently used before.
2. Explore areas/countryside I had previously forgotten existed
3. Learn new techniques - up close/from a distance etc etc.
Some friends on here have opted for macro/close up/indoor photography and some lovely work has been shown!
Where am I going with this? I am not really sure but of ONE THING I am very sure.
I have learned and am learning more and more about my hobby/profession and myself day on day!

Hang in there - try something new - expand your knowledge - have fun!! And most of all build on what you love and share it on Facebook. Heaven knows it will make a better read than a lot of the vitriol on here!

Stay Safe and be happy.

Nick
