Very Rare Beauty! Another couple of snaps of the Long Tailed Shrike!

Absolutely delighted to see this rare and beautiful visitor to the UK, what a little star 🌟

Birdguides: The long-tailed shrike (Lanius schach) is an extremely rare vagrant from Asia, with only three recorded sightings in Britain—starting with the first in November 2000 on South Uist, followed by two surprise summer appearances in Fife and the Gloucestershire-Oxfordshire border.

Delighted to see my first Hummingbird Hawk-moth, super fast and pretty!

National Trust Information:
2026 is a hummingbird hawk-moth summer.

There's been lots of sightings of the distinctive moth. It can reach 6cm in size and hovers in front of flowers during the day to feed like a hummingbird. You can hear the whirr of their wings if you get close enough.

In 2021 there were only 8 sightings recorded, and historically they've been most common along the south coast as they typically migrate here from Europe and North Africa. But this one was spotted at Stowe Gardens near Buckingham by our volunteer photographer David Humphries.

It's thought that hot weather and strong winds have driven their spread northwards, along with a possible scarcity of food in their Mediterranean breeding areas. Warmer winters might also be allowing them to overwinter in greenhouses and sheltered locations.
