Exposure isn’t always about making everything visible.
For this shot I wanted to hold onto the colour and detail in the sunset, while allowing her face to fall naturally into shadow.
So rather than simply looking at the exposure meter, I’m using the monitor and waveform while asking a slightly different question:
Does the image feel the way I want the moment to feel?
Sometimes technically “correct” exposure isn’t the most interesting exposure.
Would you lift her face, or leave the shot moody like this?
