A fiery chasm š is at the heart of the as part of the Magma Rising š art+science exhibition at
The fiery chasm wall mural by Icelandic artist Anna Guðjónsdóttir graces the back wall of the gallery, and is led to by a set of 10 oil paintings by another Icelandic artist Brandur Karlsson .
Annaās mural brings the viewer up close to the inner workings of a volcanic eruption. Her charcoal, pastel, and acrylic marks suggest lava streams, rock fissures, and scattered ash, revealing her own close experience with these natural forces. Anna Guưjónsdóttir is an internationally recognised Icelandic artist based in Germany. In her installations, the outside world is often transformed into the interior world, raising questions about why, where, and how we position ourselves.
Showcasing a variety of fiery chasms, eruption plumes, and fissures, Brandurās set of ten oil paintings on handmade Nepali paper are all based on the recent activity at Fagradalsfjall. Working from photos and from a drone, these viewpoints represent a personal reflection on the precarity and interconnectedness of life and landscape. Brandur Karlsson is an Icelandic, quadriplegic, mouth painter whose work reflects freedom and potential, unraveling new horizons of possibilities. Painting both in en plein air and in his studio provides balanced opportunities for incorporating gratitude, reflection, and optimism in his work.
