📸 EVERY FACE HAS A STORY — Meet Dave, Our Local Butcher 🥩

Some faces become part of the fabric of a town, and Dave is certainly one of them.

For decades, Dave has been a familiar face behind the butcher's counter in Camborne. But his journey into the trade began long before he opened his own shop.

From sharpening knives at just 13 years old to running his own business for nearly 35 years, Dave has dedicated his working life to butchery.

Here's his story, in his own words…

"I started out with a Saturday morning job when I was just 13 years old.

By the time I was 15, I was working full-time. My first job was learning how to sharpen knives and trim bones.

I gradually progressed to boning joints of meat, eventually learning how to prepare a whole side of beef.

In those days, every butcher had his own slaughterhouse, and when I was 16, I began learning that side of the trade too.

Two years later, I got my licence. It cost me just one shilling — that's 5p in today's money!

I continued working there until 1992, when I took the plunge and opened my own butcher's shop in Beacon.

Next year will mark my 35th anniversary of running my own business, and I've no plans to stop just yet!

I'd like to thank all my customers for their loyalty, support and custom over the years, and of course my staff, who have been part of the journey."

❤️ There's something rather special about people like Dave. In a world where so much has changed, he's continued doing what he knows and loves, serving generations of local families along the way.

And after all these years, he's still going strong!

Thank you, Dave, for sharing your story and for letting me capture a little piece of Camborne's history through my lens.

📸 Every Face Has a Story is my weekly photography project celebrating the people who make our local community what it is.

Do you know someone with a story worth sharing? I'd love to hear about them!

EVERY FACE HAS A STORY — Meet Amy 🤍
A photograph captures a face, but there’s always so much more behind it.
This week, meet Amy, owner of Pure Functional Fitness and the newly opened Pure Wellness Studio in Camborne.
Here’s Amy, in her own words…

Hi, I’m Amy.
I’m the owner of Pure Functional Fitness and Pure Wellness Studio in Camborne.
I opened my women-only gym in 2024 with one simple aim: to create a space where women could walk through the door and feel comfortable, supported and completely themselves.
As of October 1st, the next chapter begins as I open Pure Wellness Studio alongside the gym.
I genuinely love working with women. I love their company, I love hearing their stories and, just as importantly, I love learning from them.
Over the years, I’ve realised that women need so much more than somewhere to exercise.
We need spaces where we can move our bodies without judgement. Where we can become stronger, physically and mentally. Where we can talk, laugh, make friendships, learn new things and sometimes simply have an hour that belongs to us.
That’s what I want to create here.
The gym is about strength, confidence and feeling capable. The studio expands on that with movement, wellbeing and connection — bringing women together through fitness, Pilates, yoga and other classes, as well as offering support through different stages of womanhood.
I’m constantly learning and developing myself too, because I want what I offer women to keep growing with them.
For me, this has never just been about exercise.
It’s about creating a community where women feel safe, welcome and supported — and somewhere they actually look forward to coming to.
I’m incredibly excited to see what this next chapter becomes. 🤍

EVERY FACE HAS A STORY — The Turkey Man of Camborne 🦃
If you live in Camborne, there’s a good chance you’ve seen him. You may even have wondered about the man in the turkey hat!
But behind “The Turkey Man of Camborne” is a story that began with a little boy, a monkey, and an uncle who simply wanted to make his nephew smile.
Here is Tel’s story, in his own words…

My name is Tel Kmorse, although a lot of people around Camborne know me as The Turkey Man of Camborne.
It all started 10 years ago, when my nephew was diagnosed with cancer at just two years old. While he was going through chemotherapy, I desperately wanted to do something that would make him smile.
I decided to make a funny video based around his favourite animal, which happened to be a monkey. The only problem was, “The Monkey Man of Camborne” just didn’t sound right!
So I went with a turkey instead.
He loved it — and that was the beginning of The Turkey Man of Camborne.
My nephew is now 12 years old and, thankfully, cancer-free, but I never stopped being the Turkey Man. What started as something to make one little boy smile became something much bigger.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve supported seven different children going through cancer, as well as people whose families were dealing with the loss of someone to cancer. During that time, I’ve raised around £15,000 for cancer and dementia causes.
I’ve done all sorts of things to raise money and make people smile. One challenge saw me walk more than one million steps in a month, and I regularly dress up simply because sometimes making somebody laugh or smile can make a difference to their day.
I’m also part of a brotherhood called MVB. They have become like family to me. We support each other, we're always there when one of us needs help, and we get involved in charity work together too.
And these days, I’ve even got my picture painted at the top of Camborne town — complete with my hat!
I love seeing people smile when they recognise it.
What started 10 years ago as a silly video to cheer up my little nephew has become a huge part of my life.
If wearing a turkey hat makes somebody smile, then I’m happy to keep wearing it.

📸 Every face has a story — and I'd love to tell more of yours.
I'm looking for more local people to photograph for this project. You don't need to be famous or think you've done anything extraordinary. Sometimes the most interesting stories are simply about the people we see around us every day.
If you'd like to take part, or know somebody whose story deserves to be told, send me a message.

EVERY FACE HAS A STORY — Becky Lines 📸

Welcome to the second of my weekly photo stories, where I’ll be introducing you to some of the wonderful people in our local community.

A photograph captures a face, but there’s always so much more behind it.

This week, I’d like you to meet Becky Lines, someone who gives an incredible amount of her time to children and families in our local community.

Every Tuesday, Becky and a small team help provide a free hot meal for around 100 young people after school — something that started as a quiet little drop-in and has grown into something rather special.

And apparently, the young people have given it a much better name — “Holy Hot Dogs!” 🌭❤️

Here’s Becky, in her own words…

“Hi, I’m Becky Lines, the Children and Families Leader for the Camborne Cluster of Churches. I took up this role in 2021, not knowing what could be achieved or what we might offer.

I trained as a teacher and worked at Penryn College for many years before moving into families work. As a Christian, my belief is that we should love and serve those in our community, regardless of their beliefs or background, so I looked for ways that this could happen.

Tuesday Teatime — or, as the young people call it, ‘Holy Hot Dogs’ — began as a quiet after-school drop-in for families to have something hot to eat and a listening ear. It has grown into something very special, where around 100 young people come along every week on their way home from school.

We are a small team. Wes is our youth leader, and he and I set the hall up and do the shopping each week before he goes off to the senior school and I go to the infants. Then we return to the hall and I get on with preparing the food. Rev’d Graham and Rev’d Rosheen are there to chat to those who come along, and Barbara is our volunteer in the kitchen.

What we have is something very special, and one of the best things is that the young people themselves volunteer to help serve the food.

The rest of my job entails schools work, running after-school groups and Wild Church. One day I might be looking for bugs in the churchyard and, on another, telling stories to groups of children. We have five churches in our cluster and work with the communities associated with each of them. We put on holiday clubs, hold whole-school celebration services, run toddler and youth groups, and try to offer support wherever it is needed.

My job is more than that — it is a vocation which keeps me very busy, and I love the opportunities it has given me.

Away from work, I am a devoted mum and granny and am lucky to have all my grandchildren living nearby.”

Who should I photograph next? 📸

I’ve already had some wonderful people get in touch since starting Every Face Has a Story, and I’d love to hear about more.

You don’t have to be famous or have done something extraordinary. You might have overcome something, helped others, achieved something you’re proud of, have an unusual job or hobby, or simply have a life story worth sharing — because every face has a story.

If you’d like to put yourself forward, or you know somebody you think I should meet and photograph, send me a private message or tag them in the comments below. ❤️

Every Face Has a Story — Hayley Gilbert

EVERY FACE HAS A STORY

Welcome to the first of my new weekly photo stories, where I’ll be introducing you to some of the wonderful people in our local community.

A photograph captures a face, but there’s always so much more behind it.

For my very first story, I’d like you to meet Hayley Gilbert, someone who gives an incredible amount of her time to helping others in our community.

Here’s Hayley, in her own words…

“My name is Hayley Gilbert, and I’ve lived in Camborne all my life.

In 2022, I decided to set up Camborne Children’s Clothes Bank. Before Covid, I had volunteered at a children’s clothes bank, but unfortunately the pandemic brought that to an end. I knew there was still a real need for the service, so I roped in three friends and together we got things up and running.

Today, I have a fantastic team of volunteers who help every month. Thanks to Camborne Church, who provide us with a storeroom ,the use of the church, and bringing our group to life. We’ve now been running for four years and have provided hundreds of children from across Cornwall with clothing, coats, shoes, toys, books and more.

At weekends, I’m also involved with Devon and Cornwall Food Action, another charity helping families access food for a small donation, while combating food waste at the same time.

As if that doesn’t keep me busy enough, I help with the admin for my son’s team at Troon Youth Football Club and, most recently, I’ve started helping out at Camborne RFC too.

I help people — it’s just what I do.”

Who should I photograph next?
I’d love this series to introduce us to people from all walks of life in our local community.

They don’t need to be famous, have an unusual job or have done something extraordinary. They might be someone who helps others, someone who has overcome something, someone with an interesting life, or simply someone whose story deserves to be heard.

Because every face has a story.

If you know somebody you think I should meet and photograph, tag them in the comments or send me a message.

And if you have a story you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you too. ❤️

The world works in mysterious ways !

A little piece of family history brought back to life 💚

This was my nan’s old telephone table. It’s been tucked away since her passing and I couldn’t bear to part with it… so I decided to give it a new lease of life with a soft vintage makeover.

I’ve always loved pieces that carry stories, and this one means a lot to me. I can just imagine all the conversations that once happened here.

Now it’s ready to become part of something new, helping me create gentle, nostalgic portraits inspired by times gone by.

Im not sure if Nan would have approved of the colour, but she would be pleased to know it will be used 💫 #
