Not every photoshoot happens in a studio.

Last week I was on location in Swansea, capturing commercial imagery in a busy working environment.

One of the things I enjoy most about commercial photography is the variety. One day you’re photographing people in an office, the next you’re wearing a hi-vis vest and steel toe caps, working around deliveries and loading bays.

Different environments, different challenges, but the same objective: creating professional imagery that tells the story of a business.

And sometimes that means getting your boots dirty. 📸

Up at the crack of dawn or staying until sunset? You might think that and even if I was willing to, I don't think this construction worker would've been happy about it :)

This was done with some creative lighting, a gel on a light positioned about 30m behind the subject to give the illusion of the sun coming in.

Photography is getting easier but knowledge, experience and with the right gear a professional photographer can definitely get images that stand out from your competitors.

What actually makes a good headshot?

It’s not about looking overly polished or corporate.

A good headshot should simply make you look like you on a really good day.

A few things I look for when photographing someone:

→ Expression over posing. A genuine expression will always beat a perfectly positioned but uncomfortable smile.

→ Good light. It sounds obvious, but flattering light makes an enormous difference.

→ What you’re wearing matters. Not because you need to wear a suit, you usually don’t but because your clothes shouldn’t be the first thing people notice.

→ Your eyes need to be sharp. Particularly when the image is going to appear tiny on LinkedIn.

→ Leave some room around the shot. Your photographer should be thinking about where the image will actually be used, not just creating one crop.

→ Consistency matters for teams. If someone visits your company website and sees 20 completely different styles of headshot, it can make the whole thing feel a little disjointed.

And probably the biggest one…

You need to feel comfortable with the photographer.

Most people I photograph tell me they hate having their photo taken. That’s completely normal!

A big part of my job isn’t pressing the shutter - it’s getting you to forget about it.

What’s the one thing you dislike most about having your photo taken?

On this shoot it was the first day of rain for about 6 months but we soldiered on and caught a break from the weather to capture the near completion of a demolition project from Bond Demolition Limited at Heath Hospital. If you need commercial photography please give me a message or a call :)

📸 PORTFOLIO BUILDER — 10 FAMILIES ONLY (swipe to see →)
The sun's out and the summer holidays land in a couple of weeks — perfect timing for some relaxed family photos outdoors.

I'm opening up 10 outdoor family sessions at £49 (normally £150) while I build out my beach & forest family portrait portfolio.

A relaxed 20–30 minute shoot somewhere beautiful, woodland light or down by the sea and 5 beautifully edited images to keep. A lovely thing to tick off while the kids are off school.

âš¡ First 10 families only, and I'd book while this weather holds! Once the slots are gone, the price goes back up.

Comment ME or drop me a DM and I'll save you a slot 👇
